First encounter with the cops in the M5

So I'm driving to my girlfriend's house last night and I stop at a light. This is a 2 lane highway with a small shoulder next to the left lane (which I'm in)

So I'm waiting at the light and this car (an old beat up pontiac) slowly creeps by me on the shoulder and positions itself to cut me off...
I say uh uh... and gun it as soon as the light turned green. I was about 10 car lenghts ahead and he speeds up behind me... then I see the flashing lights

        it was two undercover cops...

they pull me over and one of them comes up to the car screaming "What the **** is wrong with you... you see this, this is road rage and you're f*cked now!!!"

Im thinking, there goes my insurance rate
On top of that, I'm driving with expired temp tags because the dealership is slow...
He berrated me for 10 minutes how he's gonna give me 8 points and impound my car... he's telling me i'm a hotshot with a hot car and think I'm a badass

The whole time I wasn't nervous, was never a smartass and was polite.
He asked me where I was going and I said "my girlfriend's house" he tells me to park the car in front of her house and if he sees me again that night, he's hooking the car

I then went on my way

Cliffs: make sure you know who's next to you at a light + I'm very lucky

I'm thinking if they were really that upset about your driving they would have ticketed you. Sounds more to me like they were upset about being blown away off the line. If that's the case, they really had no business pulling you over.

Anyway, congratulations (?) on not getting ticketed.

had he never came up on me on the shoulder, this would've never happened

        This so wrong

If they were on the shoulder they have no room to talk about road rage. A judge would throw this out in a heartbeat if there was any action taken by them. Such BS. If someone drove up next to me late at night on the shoulder I would have gunned out of there. In fact I would not have pulled over for a car that did not look like a police car.

These guys have no room to talk and as long as you were polite they have no legal leg to stand to stand on and they might even have some legal liability.

Sounds like they were having a bad night and just wanted to bother someone.

I would report them for Harrassing Honest Citizens ... No way they could have "clocked" you for speed (at least that is what I am thinking as not all cops have radar and they clearly couldn't keep up with you), they were entirely in the wrong and could have caused an accident ... Unspeakable horrors ...

Congrats for escaping the ticket! Why bother taking down a beat up old pontiac? In fairness I'd have probably done the same thing... but I've learned to restrain myslef (most of the time) when an unworthy opponent lines up next to me.

It's such a shame that there are police officers who seem determined to bring down the reputation of the many many good coppers who have such a hard job to do.

I would too have floored it in your situation just from a personal safety point of view. They looked, to all intents and purposes as if they were going to car jack you or similar. Two similar stories:

I pulled a bloke out of a car crash and he told me of a military friend of his, so I don't know this to be 100% fact, but he was quite convinced. His mate was driving along and someone jumped out from behind a tree and pointed a gun at him using two hands. Relying on his training he ducked down and floored it towards the man. At the last minute he realised it was a policeman with a speed gun. He did avoid him but got away without any charge. Speed camera guns require one hand to operate and they are not supposed to do things like that!

I once overtook a Nissan Primera GT in my Mazda MX-5 on an open country road. He was doing about 50mph. I got to about 65-70. The Primera caught up, but I really was not interested in any 'fun.' I was just enjoying the sunshine . A while later, Primera still behind I was feeling a bit nervous. A bit 'condition orange.' Two well built scruffy looking blokes in it and they had increased their speed to stay behind me. I did the 'three left turns' trick and they were still behind me. I came up to a roundabout and positioned my car for going straight on. At the last second I went hard left without indicating. Primera does the same. That was quite enough for some 'condition red' driving. I put my foot down and lost the Primera. I took the next junction (slip road went downhill out of sight) and got caught at the red light at the bottom. The Primera pulls up next to me. The passenger reaches into the inside pocket of his jacket. I cr*p myself and shove it in 1st gear, give it some revs, he pulls his hand out of his jacket and is holding....... a police badge. Ooooops.

On the green light I pulled over. They thought I'd nicked the car - they could see a tear in the folded down roof and I thought that they were not exactly two people just wanting directions. They realised they had followed and spooked me and so weren't bothered about the speed. We had a laugh about it and went our separate ways. Nice blokes
