Great Driving Shoes For Your M5
Hi Guys,
There was a thread awhile back asking about driving shoes for the M5, I just bought a new style from Piloti and they are grerat.
They are called " Prototipo". The pedal feel is top notch, they are easy to heel and toe and you can walk around all day with them and they are as comfortable as any Nike.
I definitely shift smoother with these shoes due to the more tactile feel during clutch engagement.
You can buy them at: www.piloti.com
p.s. I have no connection to this company, they are simply the best shoes I have ever driven with.

Are these driving shoes worth it? I mean do they honestly make that much of a difference?
They cost (at least the ones I've seen) around $400...?

Driving shoes make a big difference if you have big feet. People under a size 12 shouldnt even bother.

I currently have 2 pairs of Pilotis....Special Edition Laguna Seca G16's and a pair of Spyder Sv's. I am in love with the new "Proto's" and totally agree that they are great shoes. I wear them as an everyday shoe

I love my SpyderSV and DTM. Excellent driving shoes that are also good walking/loafing shoes.

I respectively have to disagree with you on this one. When driving a manual car how your foot relates to the clutch, brake and gas pedal can be enhanced by having foot gear that lets you have a better tactile feel for the pedals. For example, take your business dress shoes with slick bottoms and go do some spirited driving. Then get a pair of driving shoes and do the same line, you will notice a big difference.
If your statement were true, why do race car drivers from Formula1. Indy, Nascar, all racers in fact where special shoes? It isn't all for fire protection and safety, enhanced performance is also a goal.
Granted I don't race my M5, but when I'm driving on Mulholland Drive near my house it feels great to heel and toe, and row thru the gears and push my car with my driving shoes on.
So of course you don't have to own driving shoes, but for me it's more fun to drive with them on.

, i am interested in buying the prototipo but am worried about the sizes. depending on the shoe, (for example, i am 13 for nike but 12 for reebok..go figure) the shoe size changes. anyplace where we can actually try them on before buying? thanks

I 100% agree, but vs. a decent pair of rubber soled shoes most ppl wont notice a major difference in feel (there is a difference, dont get me wrong). They really start to matter when you have to press 2 pedals at once accurately. It is extremely difficult to heel/toe with big feet....even driving shoes.

It's more for fire protection in nascar and sportscars. In indy and f1, the footwells are so small that they HAVE to wear them or their feet would get stuck between the top and bottom of the footwell. Even though I did wear nomex driving shoes when I went to do the skip barber race school, I still had trouble with my feet fitting.

They are cut very (VERY) narrow. I'd say go with the bigger size.
