New guy, need first car help desisions.

Hi the reason i dont/cant own an M5 is the insurance costs.
Im almost 22 and only just doing my driving lessons (yes im an idiot), hence need slower car first.

Now i was thinking of a E34 518 for a year or two to build my NCB.

I checked confused.com for various prices on insurance costs... here are the quotes. (all TPF&T)

A Fiat Cinq (lowest ins group car i could think of) =£971.43.
Chrysler Neon (average 2litre car) =£1643.38
Omega(i thought cheap RWD car) =£1976.50
        BMW 518 =£2080.62
        BMW 520 =£2345.86
        E34 M5 (just for fun) =£3711.30

Would you reccomend a 518 at first?.

Ive been drooling over this site all day, mainly in the E34 section.

Omega and 518 are both good cars. Just not very well in resale value after some time because of the serious running costs putting a lot of people off, hence the low price you can get them now.

Getting an E34 M5 means spending a lot of money on maintenance when you get it, in the next year and the next year. Its not the purchase price, its maintenance. Very expensive, very labour intensive. I understand the insurance is shocking, but thats not all mate!

If I were you, I'd get me an E34 520 24V first. Thats a lot better than the 518, and easier to sell afterwards.. Omega is fast depreciating and not an easy car to get rid of.

Prepare for some maintenance cost on ANY E34 though. Its hard on suspension parts, brakes etc.

Fiat cinq is probably your safest choice, although most of us regard those as even too slow for the wives!

Chrysler Neon is no car, has never been and never will be. There crap in every way. Handling is not awful, but not good either. Build quality is VERY poor, materials cheap, no power.

I'd focus on a 6 cil E34 . preferably with mud-flaps and no 17's or spoilers. Just an old fart car so you know its not boy raced.. Get yourself the rims you want off E-bay, put in white indicators and there you go.

        Good luck.
Feel free to PM me if you have any more specific questions or links with ads with cars that you want to look at.

No problem. I already figured because nobody dares to include .cents in prices except insurers!

I think the 300odd quid a year is worth running a 6cil. BTW you can look into other ins quotes aswell, recently some UK members found out that they can do a lot better than they initially thought.. I think its some girl called Claire at some ins company. Just search for : clair: in the E34 section and the thread will come right up.

        OK

        Wout
