        Rear Clanking Sound

        Hi,

I know this is a M5 forum but need some technical expertise from the technical guru within the forum. This is the closest thread I can find to my problem and that is why I am posting here. Possible driveshaft or differential Issue

        2001 E39 528i - 68000 KM Mileage

Lately I have been hearing Clank-ing sound from the rear of the car when I engage the auto gearbox to D or R. There is no sound when I move it to P or N. The sound is clanking 3 times in succession everytime I engage D or R. The sound can be heard as well when I am accelerating or decelerating at low speeds. At cruising speeds there is no sound even when accelerate or decelerate.

I have recorded the sound whilst the car is on stationary and engaging D to R and vice versa whilst pressing on the brakes. The wav file is attached.

Thanks in advance. Your technical assistance is much appreciated.
