Where can I find the best "free" spyware detector & remover?

Hello Guys,
I checked out www.cnet.com (download.com)
to see if I could find the most popular/effective spyware software to download into my PC but didn't find it, plus Im not sure which is better than the other.
Any advise or recommedations would be appreciated.
Thanks.
Robert

Robert:

Right now I am using ad aware from Lavasoft and am happy with the results. It may not be the best system available but it is free. Hope this helps.

Re: Where can I find the best "free" spyware detector & remover?

There are only two good ones, Adaware and SpyBot Search and Destroy.

Spybot is available from http://security.kolla.de

Adaware is at http://www.lavasoftusa.com

Remember to update the definitions in Spybot, (like you would a virus killer), from within the program before running it. Easy to do.

I trust spybot to about 30 computers .. half of those are used by teenage punks, it works wonders and keeps me from reinstalling every month.

Re: Where can I find the best "free" spyware detector & remover?

Go to www.spychecker.com

They have all kinds of spy or ad ware checkers and blockers. Personally I use both Spybot S&D AND AdAware 6.0 Personal edition. This combination will catch a bunch of stuff. They have ratings and links to the software as well as if it is shareware/freeware.

Some other great security products are ZoneAlarm 4 Pro. This thing is a great firewall plus it blocks all kinds of ads, webbugs, hides your header info, simple cookie control and cleans your cache for specified apps!

Another great IE add on is Adshield. I use the free version to block macromedia flash from websites. Just go into the maintain block list and type in ".sfw" and all macromedia flash is blocked!!
