6 speed manuell or sequential gearbox?

What type of gearbox do you prefer?

I`ve had the pleasure of driving the 996tt with a 6 speed manuell, and the Maserati Cambiocorsa (the face lifted 3200 with paddle shift). My conclusion is that the 996 is fantastic, while the Maserati hits you in the back way to hard during gear changes.

I know that the cars can`t be compared, but what is your general opinion of the sequential gearboxes? Can they compete with the good old 6 speed?

Maybe a new car like the Gallardo or the E60 M5 have a better system? My choice is not to throw away the manuell just yet though.

Double clutch heel and toe a nice ZF or Getrag box down from 6th to 2nd, nail a perfect corner, then upshift. Tell me if the SMG's will make your spine tingle like that would. The novelty factor of SMG's is great, but I'll row em myself till the day I die.

Well, for mass-production cars, the (ultra) long-term trend is to head away from offering conventional manual transmissions.

But it'll be years and years before that happens. In the meantime, it's likely that customers will be able to choose between 3 or even 4 transmission options for the same model (manual, DC auto, SMG, CVT).

Incidentally, no matter in which country it happens to be, I always find myself in traffic-clogged locations.
Due to that, I quite like the idea of the SMG as a split between a real manual and the convenience of a conventional auto.

I did a search but most of the post was related to the SMG system, and not to the members general thought about the sequential gearboxes (Why I postet it as an OT). Besides most of the posts where quite old, and I suspect more people have been experiencing sequential gearboxes at this point.

I think the heavy traiffic is a good reason to chose a sequential gearbox, and ExplDeleted has a strong point there. However the clutch isn`t as hard as they used to be on many sportscars, and I wish the automatic clutch in the cars I have driven with sequential gearboxes would be a bit better.
