Who listens to jazz?
Just curious how many people on here listen to jazz. If so could you reccomend some good artists/songs to check out as i'm afraid my current knowledge in this field of music is limited to Dave Brubeck and only a few others.
Thanks
-Dally

Dave Brubeck
Carnavalito -- Latin Jazz genre (Their version of "Autumn Leaves" is awesome!)
Kenny Werner -- the superb pianist in a classic jazz trio.
That's about all I know. My Jazz collection is rather limited. No time to expand.

Diana Krall, she's west coast Canadian!
I'm intersted in mostly instrumentals, the only vocal artists i've found I like are Diana Krall, Norah Jones and Nina Simone. Something smooth and upbeat like Brubeck's "Time Out" is wat I'd like to find more of.
Thanks
-Dally

Dally,
I completely forgot to mention Danilo Perez. If you like Brubeck, you will not be disappointed with Danilo Perez.

Dally,
If you like Brubeck, check out Bill Evans...late great jazz piano. My favorite current jazz pianist is Keith Jarrett. Gene Ammons for classic jazz sax (great ballad ensemble). Also, Sonny Rollins for sax, early Miles Davis for trumpet, Ray Brown for bass. There are so many. Hard to know where to start not knowing your tastes.
Bluedog,
If you like Diana Krall, check out Canadian Holy Cole and my favorite Canadian jazz singer, Patricia Barber (she is unbelievable). I also like Christy Barron, Jane Monheit, and Sara K.

Diana Krall is absolutely amazing. Just a powerful voice. I'll have to look in some of the recomendations on this thread as well. Great thread to start ///Momentum.

there are alot of great jazz bands out there (most of these artists are dated but still are provide great listening):
-Dave holland: perhaps the best Jazz composer/Bassist in the world (its NOT easy listening, musically it is incredible, the average jazz listener might not like it)
-Bill Evans: keys
-John Coltrane: this is a given
-Miles Davis: trumpet
-Dizzy Gillespie: trumpet
-Wayne Shorter: sax
-Sonny Rollins: sax
-Jeff Richmond: guitarist from LA, he does mostly fusion which is just as satisfying as jazz imho.
-Pat Matheny: great guitarist.
-Oscar Peterson: Legendary Canadian Pianist.
Some good Latin/Jazz artists:
-Michele Camilo: the best pianist i have heard in the afro cuban/jazz genre, plays with top notch players.
-A band called Tolu with Justo Almario on sax, Alex Acuna on drums, Abe Laboriel on bass.
-A good Album is Road Scholars By Spyro Gyra (its a live album, great fusion/jazz/latin music all around).
-Chick Corea: yet another legendary Pianist, i recommend the acoustic band, not the electric band. Mostly Jazz/Latin.
i could really go on forever, those artists should hold you at bay for awhile. I am a music student, so i listen to this stuff all the time .
