Finance Minister Suchart Jaovisidha turned escape artist yesterday after the computer system in his BMW 520 failed, trapping him inside.
The incident occurred just a few metres from the minister's home, as he was en route to a meeting at the Royal Orchid Sheraton Hotel.
Mr Suchart said he and his driver were trapped inside the car for 10 minutes before security guards arrived from his housing estate.
All of the car's doors and windows locked automatically when the computer failed, and the air-conditioning shut down as well.
``I could hardly breathe at that time so I decided to gesture to the guards to help but it took a long time before they realised what was going on,'' he said.
After the guards used a sledgehammer to smash a window, Mr Suchart's driver crawled out to unlock the door for his anxious boss.
``It was a harrowing experience,'' the minister said, adding that the incident put him 35 minutes behind schedule.
In addition to the BMW, which Mr Suchart has had since he was a senior civil servant at the Finance Ministry, he has a state-supplied Mercedes-Benz but it's in the garage for repairs.
A BMW technical supervisor said the company was investigating the mishap.
