Are you happy with what you have?

Hello I am new to this forum. I do not own a BMW but I am an admirer of BMWs. I just have a few questions for members of this forum. It is just my curiousity that has me posting this on BMWM5.com.

A little about myself, I am a sophmore in college majoring in Political Science. I hope to join the Air Force after college and go into Intelligence with one days hopes of making it into the CIA, or the FBI. A dream of mine is to joing the Military's special forces, but I don't think I could do it.

Anyways, back to the topic , I have had many conversations with people about what it takes to be happy. I personally feel that money makes *most* people happy. Although most people disagree with me. They claim that once you get money, chances are you will be unhappy. Stress from being wealthy will play a role, also you will just buy everything you want and then when you have it all, you will say "now what"? People claim the weathly get bored once they buy everything.

I have friends that say once you become wealthy you don't treat people as well and you will look down on anyone that is less succesfull as yourself. You (being the wealthy) will expected to be waited on and always treated as if you are the president. I have met anyone that I knew was extreamely wealthy.

I believe, that the wealthy for the most part enjoy themselves. Although they can buy basically whatever they want, it is still enjoyable. I just can't see that being wealthy, I'd be unhappy. Most of the time, when I hear people complain either at work or social outings, its about not having money or not being able to pay for something. When you are wealthy, almost all money concerns go out the window. Most people call me materialistic, but I don't believe I am.

Now, everyone that I have talked to have been average middle class citizens. They either have 40 hour a week jobs, or are students. I am from a middle class house, both parents work, I am in school and pay for it myself. I am hoping the Air Force will help me pay for college. My parents never brought me up stressing money is everything in life, this is just something I have come across on my own.

While reading this board I have read that most people have earned what they have on thier own. Many have very good jobs, and most have worked hard and now its there time to play. I respect people that work for what they have.

I'd appreciate if people would respond to what I have said. Do you believe that with the wealth comes happiness? Or were you able to obtain happiness in life by other ways? Also, have you noticed that the wealth has effected you has a person for the worse or for the better?

I appreciate everyones response and again this is just for my own interest. I just would like to see what successful, intelligent, respectable people think of this topic. Thank you for all your responses.

"Happiness is a cigarette, a chocolate chip cookie, or a 5 second orgasm"

10 points if you know who said that...

Wealth doesn't equal happiness...At least not in my opinion. Happiness is what you make out of the cards life deals you. Read the Discourse on Inequality by Jean-Jacques Rousseau. He argues that humanity is a vicious cycle that starts with man being in the state of nature, then with the advent of industry and wealth, people began to differentiate between strong/weak, rich/poor, etc. Government was instituted to try and equalize these inequalities, however it just served to make the weak/poor more servile. When government becomes too corrupt, people will wage wars, civilization will be destroyed, and we will progress to a state of nature brought about by corruption. However, keep in mind that Rousseau believes man was never meant to advance passed a state of not caring about the future, and only living for the present. To Rousseau, that was happiness. Just my take on it.

Glowrider: Thank you for responding. After doing a bit of research, I found out who said the quote:

"'I'm not haappy. I'm not haappy. My life didn't turn out like I waantedit....' ***WELCOME TO THE F****** CLUB!!!!!!!!!!!*** NOBODY'S happy! Happiness comes in small doses, alright? It's a cigarette, a chocolate chip cookie, a 5-second orgasm. You eat the cookie, you have the orgasm, you smoke the cigarette, you fall asleep you wake up in the morning and you go to f****** work, alright?!?"

I believe it was said by Dennis Leary. Good quote, but who is Dennis Leary? I found it a little less than half way down on this site: http://emacbeth.home.mindspring.com/Quotes/fuches4.html

That is interesting what you said. And although at the begining of the post, I am starting to see what happiness really is. This quote that you said "Happiness is what you make out of the cards life deals you" Its perfect. Happiness is only want you want it to be. I am also going to check out that books, seems like something that would be interesting to read. From what Rousseau says, it seems to be saying basically money = power and its because people made it that way.

Do you live in Present or do you live for the future? I believe I live for the future since right now I am in college preparing for the future. Although I do know people that live for today.

Also, Glowrider, your a member over at Speed-Society.com aren't you? I know I reconized that user name!

speed-society? no...As far as Denis Leary, he's a very famous actor/comedian who happens to hail from the Boston area, but I don't hold that against him. He is also first cousins with the great Conan...O'Brien As for where I live, I live in the moment, while planning for the future I live my life day to day, while in college, hehe. Hope that helps.

I have been poor and I have been fortunate with a little extra financial success. Happiness is an attitude not a bank account.

People who are looking for something money, mate, a new car to make them happy will probably never be. Happiness is from within and if you are happy it is a hell of a lot easier to be successful however you difine success (and money is not the only definition of success).
