what to do about horrible AT&T Wireless service in NC

I have the GSM AT&T 3G service in Raleigh, NC and have had it for 3-4months now. It is HORRIBLE service and is constantly just dead. When I am on campus at UNC it has NO service even tho there is an ATT tower right off campus (but not sure if its a GSM tower or what - it was for my TDMA AT&T but I don't understand if the towers are compatible or what). Also, I'm paying $15 more a month so I can't afford the Data service stuff. What should I do? I call up AT&T and try to tell them that the service is horrible and they are like "yeah I know and we don't know if we will ever upgrade or what the future holds". Apparently they were going to do a business deal w/ Cingular and/or Verizon to share GSM network towers but b/c of the economy it fell through - so are they just going to leave GSM as shitty service? When I call to complain they tell me there is nothing I can do. Do I have any options?

Not speaking from personal experience, because I'm sitll on TDMA, but I've heard alot of people say that GSM sucks in the US.

What do I suggest? Change providers.

yeah but i bought a new phone ($$) and am stuck w/ a year contract...i was hoping someone had info on new towers or a merger w/ att or something or could be like call and complain to this part of the company or anything. i guess i'll have to call att and complain. also, i wish i could get a trial month of data service b/c i have no idea how much it costs for my actual usage - i tried to check email and it downloaded like 2400 headers of email so now i'll probably have to pay like 3000000000 dollars for my data usage just b/c i pressed the mmode button by mistake

TDMA and GSM uses different towers.... I think the AT&T GSM uses the old voicestream ones....
