Tips for a 4-figure project car that could give a return

Hi all,

My buddy Adam Neely (Klub Vintage in NJ) and I are considering going into a project car together. I'd mainly be financing a good bit of it - he does restorations/build-ups. His pieces so far have mostly been e21's, e30s, e28's...

But he'd like to do something fun for the two of us to go into together and maybe turn around in 6 months or a year for a tidy profit.

This isn't something I ever really looked into before as it's not my forte. We have a 4-digit budget, probably $8-9k max and if we went there it'd need to sell for $15k+ when we were done. Ideally $4-7k.

I'm looking for tips on specialty cars that fit this mold and that pop up from time to time. We're open to everything from:

1. A wrecked/rusty 993 or 87-89 911, maybe even a beat-up 911 SC
2. A porsche 914 we could do a total strip down and maybe drop a different engine into it - I got him hooked on the idea a few years back when I showed him an article of a 914 built up with a Subaru WRX 2.0 liter turbo in it.

3. Possibly an M-car of some sort....bit leery of this

Anyway....I don't think a wrecked 993 is in the budget, but I'm just sharing to give an idea. Something with a manual transmission, some rarity, some soul, and a pretty good market for a restored model.

I'd welcome any input Just something we're tossing around...

Joe

What about a Triumph TR6? I had one a while back, it was fun until it rusted itself into the ground. Sold it for parts for more than 5 times what I paid. 2.5 liter straight 6 sounded great. I've seen running cars in the price range you're asking about. Bodywork is probably going to be the biggest issue. Fully restored they sell easily in the teens. Parts aren't too hard to source, The Roadster Factory in Armagh PA or Moss Motors had anything I ever needed.

good luck with the hunt

I think the older aircooled 911's (70's?) are starting to appreciate. A beat up one should be able to be had for minimal and restored and sold for a decent profit. never researched numbers though, I could be suggestiong somethign waaaay out of budget.

We found a 1972-1973 2002tii project car. M10 engine with 5-speed trans is sitting besides the car. Car is in decent shape with no seats/carpets and some other interior bits gone, but a big brake kit and upgraded suspension already installed. Price is right.

Haven't finalized the deal yet, but it's looking good!

Spunds like a cool project. I was going to say that an older muscle car could be built and then re-sold for profit

Project is shaky a bit, deal still in the works. The car turned out not to be an actual tii (though we have the engine, an ireland engineering suspension, and can make it a credible upgrade/reproduction of one). Anyway, it's no longer the absolute steal....
