Cylinders vs. Displacement

I've been wondering this for a while now......... all things being equal, whats the best way to make power? more displacement? or more cyliders? would you want a 5.0l v8 or a 5.0l v10? I guess this is a simple answer when looking at it like S62 vs S85? How about S62 vs S65??? If both engines are completely rebuilt with the best parts money can buy, wich makes more power, keeping the displacements equal? If you were trying to build the ultimate engine, what would it be? Size? Displacment? Would you want a 8.0l v10 or a 6.0l v12? I'm really just trying to get a better understanding on how displacment and the number of cylinders have an effect on making power. I figured you guys could set me straight. Is more cylinders the answer?

yeah, I know. I obviously wouldn't want a 2.0l v12 or for that matter a 8.0l I6. By destroking your going to lose displacement and torque but make higher revs and HP? where as, if you took that same engine and increased the displacement you would increase HP and torque but lose some revs?

Maybe someone could use a BMW engine as an example?

Ultimately it's displacement. It's all about how much fuel can be burned. That depends on how much air can be moved in and out of the engine.

Example....You take engine X which is 2.0 L and then turbocharge it, put nitrous in it, port the heads, anything you want. Then make that exact same engine 2.5 L and you'll have more capacity to make more HP. That is the most basic law.

Now if someone with more engineering experience than me can explain why we have V10's vs. V8's. My thoughts are that is has to do with the torque/RPM range characteristic the engine designer wants in the vehicle.

My understanding is that there is an optimum displacement per cylinder. A point at which power manufacture is most efficient. BMW believes it is .5, hence the 10 cylinder 5.0 liter S85 engine.

so the ideal configuration would be a 6.0l V12? I guess that would make sense considering it was good enough for the Mclaren F1!

"There is NO replacement for displacement" i guess thats true except for forced induction...

I believe the number of cylinders is a variable that has to do with smoothness... for example: a 5L V10 is smoother than a 5L V8... can anybody confirm this?
