California DMV rant.

So my car was in an accident on 7/12. My registration expired on 8/14. While the car was in the body shop, I sent in the renewal for my 2010 registration ($1010). Then the car was deemed to be a total loss. Went to DMV yesterday to register my new M5 and asked if I can just use the money that was left on the table from my previous car. Guess what? You can't get refunded. It is a crappy feeling to lose a $1000 bucks.

See, this is all normal for California. We pay lots for everything. Its like living in a quasi-socialistic state. So when the rest of the country bicthes about paying more for things....its just normal for us.

All the taxes add up here in CA. Property tax is like 1.25% of the value of your house unless you live in a new development paying mela roos tax in addition to your prop tax.

Car registration just went up this year. Last year it was about $600. Basically, I feel like I was driving by sacramento and threw out a $1000 out of my window. And man, no sympathy at the DMV when you're trying to explain to the lady that yes, I bought a $100K car but it still hurts to part with $1000.

Simple. Your insurance company owes you the money!

Unless you made the mistake of settling the claim in full and NOT including all registration fees AND SALES TAX as part of the settlement.

Don't blame the state- you were insured against this loss.
