For those who think that the dealer was abusing the OP, how would you react if the opposite happened? What if you bargained in good faith, purchased your car, and then the next day the salesman called you and said he wanted to cancel the deal? What if he said that he sold the car too cheap, or said the trade-in wasn't worth what they thought it was worth? Would you bring the car back and cancel the deal, or laugh in his face?
What if he decides to cancel the deal on his end without your permission?

I've read a bunch of good comments here. I keep my customers happy because I act as if they are always right (generally speaking). Even if they are wrong, I find more value in keeping the customer happy if at all possible. Certainly I, nor the dealership, are in the business to give money away. In the end I feel the bad feelings cost the dealership more than eating a few bucks to keep a customer happy. Of course that isn't a hard and fast rule that can apply to all cases. In this case i'd try to determine what I am out on the Mini since it has been titled and i believe legally can't be sold as new.
So many variables here...first time customer wants a favor? not likely...5th car purchase? maybe...
I think dealers would enjoy more repeat business and a lot more word of mouth referrals if they were more balanced between their interests and the interests of their customers...
Hey everyone, this is an experience that I hope never happens to any of you out there.
I don't think most would consider returning the car, and buying back the trade! In my mind, once i've bought a car, i consider it mine, for better or worse. My mother is pretty good at returning things though... Tough lesson

It was a Friday night sale, 15 hours later they wanted to return it- it CLEARLY wasn't titled overnight. This was a perfectly "unwindable" deal, the dealer just chose not to.
Worth a $1000 lesson, not $5k!
I'd take a bat to the sales managers car late a night every other month for a year....
