Oil changes

I change the oil and filter right after I bought my M5. Why do most of you change the oil only after 3000 miles? Doesn´t it last more than that (granted I put more oil in the engine after every 900 miles since it burns so much). After how many miles or kilometers will the oil service light go on?

Basically, what are the mileage intervals for oil changes on the e34 M5? I also change the filter every time, right?

Than you!

I change the oil about every 2,5 to 3K just because I don't use the car all that much and basically you get moisture getting into the oil over time, like the brake fluid. Also if you tend to do round town stuff with short distances, its alot harder on the oil which breaks down quicker (not to say I don't always at least try and make sure it gets to full temp on switch off.

The BMW oil service interval determind by the computer ( about 6K-10K with regular driving) I think is fair anyway, its just we love our M5's and dont fancy spending £15K on a new engine. When doing an oil change you should always change the filter which are cheap as chips!

Oil changes should be a function of use and engine temperature. If you are using the TMS 10W-60 or another quality synthetic, they stand up much better to shear forces, oxidation and temperature degradation than conventional oils.

There is no need to change your oil every 3000 miles unless a large portion of those miles represent high speed/high temperature driving or driving in high dust environments.

Everyone changes oil with fairly high frequency because they believe it is cheap insurance and it is hard to argue with that considering the cost of rebuilds.

I use 10W-60 ($9/liter) so I change at around 8000 miles and I know the oil is still in good condition when I change it.

According to my cars service book it shows that oil services were done on average 5 to 7 thousand miles between inspections.

Yes, modern synthetic oils will last +5000 miles, but seeing how
none of us hang about, and the engine would be so damm expensive to replace...most of us see fit to change at 3K (if you can afford it..)

Above that I aways change oil + filter before a track day.

Think I've got the job down to 15 minutes......

Did mine again yesterday, this time about 5000 miles.

Note, I`m still using Castrol Maganatec 10sw40 as I`ve never had problems with it. Halfords in the UK are doing a deal on 2L bottles for the price of the 1L bottle, £7.99, which works out cheaper than the 4.5L bottle at £21.99

Also, check this ;

Castrol TWS 10sw60.....

In my area now only selling in the local main dealer at the bargain price of £14.49 per litre bottle, not available in any other size.

Crikey.... $9/litre is a bargain.
