Fast Attack Motorsports S85 V-10 Performance Tuning

Having spent years studying the internal workings of the Siemens MSS60 and MSS65 Digital Motor Electronics (DME) and their associated programming, we are proud to announce our performance DME tuning. Distributed with our η-Flash© Tablet, you can read your existing DME calibration, flash the modified calibration files, and check diagnostic codes.

Philosophy
As in most things we enter the market in, we approach things a bit differently with a clean slate. With this in mind, we have abandoned the traditional sales model for tuning in referring to "stages". The term is somewhat arbitrary and leads to misconceptions as to what the product is capable of. Gone also are the à la carte pricing for the somewhat mundane options available. Most of these changes are a few bytes of data changed here or there and represent no significant additional amount of work to enable or disable.

Performance
The bottom line in choosing an ECU calibration for almost everyone is performance. No matter how great a company's reputation, customer service, or choice of options, performance is the measure by which the product will be judged. While performance gains will vary from one engine to the next, horsepower gains of 25-30 HP can be expected on a stock engine without any supporting bolt-on upgrades. The throttle response is significantly improved as well as shift characteristics. We currently are offering calibration services for NA engines including tuning for increased displacement. Several of the recent 6.0L stroker engines built by Troy Jeup, LLC have used our tune with excellent results. Forced Induction offerings are in the works and expected to be available in the fall.

Passion
The S85 and S65 engines were the primary drivers for the formation of our company. They represent the last bastion of pure naturally aspirated BMW M Power and embody all the principles which vaulted BMW to the top of the motorsports world and performance car market. We have helped many owners over their years out of passion for the platform, long before the notion of forming a business even came to us. As a business, we carry this even further and will stand behind our product and support our customers.

Options

- Speed Limiter Removal: The factory DME limits the vehicle to 155 MPH via internal software. This option removes the limiters to allow exploring the upper end of what these vehicles are capable of. Please, use responsibly in a controlled environment such as on the race track or air strip.

- O2 Readiness Override (For off-road use only): One of the largest restrictions in the S85's airflow path is the close-coupled catalytic converters located in the headers. Many aftermarket off-road use headers remove the primary cats or replace them with high-flow race cats to allow the engine to breath better. This results in a "Service Engine Soon" light illuminated on the instrument cluster as the DME stores a code for "Catalytic Converter Efficiency" due to the increased oxygen present at the post-cat O2 sensors. This option removes the SES light generated by this condition to allow for other more significant error codes to alert the driver when something is wrong.

- Cold Start Delete: This option removes the catalytic converter heating routine which was implemented on most modern vehicles for the purpose of meeting ULEV and SULEV emissions certifications in the US. The US DOT set the requirements for these certifications so that a new vehicle entering the US market must meet the applicable emissions requirements within a short period of time after engine start from a cold condition. In order to achieve this, most all auto manufacturers relocated the catalytic converters as close to the engine as possible (in the actual exhaust manifold for most BMWs) and implemented a "Katheizen" (German for Cat Heating) routine in the DME. This Katheizen routine alters the exhaust valve timing, fuel injector pulse-width, and ignition timing to allow for incomplete combustion of a cylinder's air/fuel charge before entering the exhaust manifold where combustion continues, rapidly warming up the catalytic converter. This accounts for the "cold-start" sound of the S85 and rather rough running that occurs if driven away prior to completion of the cycle. Selecting this option disables the Katheizen routine entirely and has no negative effect whatsoever on the normal operation of the engine. In fact, it is our opinion that combined with the low cylinder pressures and higher than average oil consumption of the S85, that this routine may be a contributing factor in the short life-span of the primary cats many S85 owners have experienced over the years.

- RPM Limiter Raised: Standard option is for 8500 RPM. Please note this is primarily to allow for stretching out a gear a bit longer to allow coming into the next gear slightly higher in the power curve. The S85 torque and horsepower curves are already declining at this point due to restrictiveness of the intake tract.

Package
Our tuning product is packaged in the form a hand-held tablet. The tablet is used to perform the initial read of the vehicle and then connected to a PC for extraction of the base file. The base file is emailed to us and we make the modifications according to your options list and normally within 1-2 days we email a modified file package. These are loaded into the tablet via a PC and then flashed into the DME. The tablet is convenient as it can be kept in the glove box for handy use and switching between calibrations.

Pricing
Our tuning package is normally priced at $799 including the tablet, but we are offering it at $688 for M5 Board members for a limited time. Just enter the coupon code "M5BOARD" at checkout and to reflect the correct pricing.

Some new features are in the works. Some may not be new to the S85 world, but new to us. On the other hand, some may just be new altogether. ;)

- Modified Rev limiter in both cold and hot oil conditions. As we know there are some "concerns" about the S85 rod bearings potentially related to oil temperatures. While I personally don't feel that cold oil alone is responsible for the wear patterns we've seen, there's no question that colder oil will not flow as easily and it's unhealthy to wind the engine up high without proper flow. These rev limiting modifications are meant to be more restrictive in colder oil to keep the owner honest and even more so, to protect the engine when someone unaware of the S85's sensitivity may be driving. Additionally, hot oil can be a concern as well and while the detrimental effects may be via different mechanism than cold oil, the idea here is to limit the RPM of the engine and therefore the heat generation into the oil until the cooling system can catch up; or in the event of a cooling system casualty to protect the engine.

- SMG Shift characteristics remapping. Certainly not the first to play in this arena, but I was unwilling to offer anything here until I had tested it and fully understood all the variables, formulas, limiters, and maps associated with this. This took quite a bit of work digging around not only in the mss65's maps and functional documents, but in the SMG3 module data files looking at the variables and tables as well. There are a staggering number of things which can be modified here for improved performance when the goals are different than that of an OEM such as torque reserves, slip limits, as well as the shift speed and torque matching parameters. This will be an ongoing development with the end goal of two different "characters", one being significantly more aggressive than the other.

- VANOS adjustment speed improvement. One of the more odd limitations imposed by the DME is the rate at which it is allowed to change VANOS timing. This is still under development and dyno testing ongoing. Initially, this is showing improved mid-range responsiveness, but more testing will be conducted to quantify the results.

- Alphan-N is one I get asked about the most and while I'm happy to tune an existing Alpha-N car, I haven't offered it as an option for cars without the modifications necessary yet. This is changing soon as our 3D printing capability comes online so we can finally manufacture what has truly been missing here: Plug and Play Alpha-N sensors. To me, a product isn't quite finished and ready for the end consumer if it requires cutting and modifying the car's wiring harness. BMW and Tyco electronics have an exclusive agreement for many of the electrical connectors used on these cars and they are not able to be sourced anywhere but BMW and in some cases at all. MAF plugs match this description, so our answer is to 3D print a pin housing that will allow an IAT sensor to plug straight into the MAF connector on the engine wire harness.

As always, any further developments will be offered to existing customers free of charge. This is not a static product and there are very few companies out the continuing development on this platform. My focus is not chasing numbers on dynos or Vbox, but there have been some great results reported. To me, this is about further enhancing the capability and feel of the car, to the maximum extent allowed with the stock DME by determining what constraints exist and careful analysis of why they exist before pushing them. Thanks for your support and positive feedback, that's the part that makes this all fun for me.

Evening Jim, was making arrangements to purchase the new tune you have developed for the M5 and didn't see the code option for the discount for M5 board members - is it still available ?

Thanks,

Dan
Yes, once you add it to your cart, there is a field below to enter the coupon code "M5BOARD".

Is there any limitation in number of times we can apply tunes to the DME?
Technically there is, but it's in the thousands. The 64 write limit some speak of refers to the AIF (user information) fields and those record the date, VIN, and version during a write. AIFs are only written with BMW software (ISTA/P or WinKFP), so none of those slots are used with aftermarket tuning.

You want to look at feature "Coding" instead of ECU tuning. The easiest way to to purchase Carly for BMW. Its a Bluetooth enabled dongle that plugs into the ODB port and can be used for daigs and feature coding with the accompanying app for android or iphone. The other method is to search the forums for the cable and software you need to read the modules and options in the car.

Very interested here. A few quick Questions:

-How does the SMG tune compare to the EURO software for SMG?
-How far along are you with the Alpha-N?
-Do you charge extra for each option or is all included?
-Is there a charge for updates or if future modifications are added such as de-cating or Alpha-N?

Hello Joseph,

- The SMG modifications that I make are completely different from the the Euro SMG firmware. My alterations are to the shift command characteristics inside the DME calibration and nothing to do with how the SMG computer actually carries out those commands. The end result is improved shift speeds and comfort at all RPM/Load combinations.

- I haven't pursued it much yet as I'm still learning my prototyping hardware. Once I can manufacture the kit components myself, I will make it available

- No charge for any options, with the exception of the future alpha-N arrangement since it will require additional pieces for installation.

- No charge for updates in the future (within reason of course) as you modify your car.

10,000+ miles with FAMS and still happy with my tune. I came from a Dinan tune.

Bmw is updating my dme

Does anyone know if i now will need to re read stock file and send back to jim? Or will the tuned file i have already be ok to load back?

I wonder if the dme software is like global settings and the aftermarket tune just adusts parameters inside these global setting in the dme??
