Intro

Essentially all development for S85 powered M5 and M6 cars stopped in 2009. Being that we had numerous local customers with S85 powered vehicles, we decided to open up the books and start from scratch on our in house S85 development. We have been developing mapping for the MSS65 in the E9X M3 for years. From that, we learned many strategies that directly correlate to tuning the S85. Development was done on numerous different vehicles with different levels of modifications on our in house Mustang MD150AWD Dynamometer. Unlike most that offer S85 tuning, we started from scratch rather than simply buying files from European software engineers. In the tuning market, many shops buy modified files from European developers and call them their own. While gains are found with canned flashes on the market, some may not optimize all the available tables on a dyno like we have. One can easily tell who is developing and who is buying pre-tuned maps and selling them as their own by looking at who has an in house chassis dyno for development. At BrenTuning, we always strive to innovate rather than copy. We are at the forefront for development of many different platforms — the S85 is no different.

How we tune

Many people ask us what we do different than the competition and how we find so much power in these already highly tuned engines. We constantly get told that our tunes aren’t safe and that we hit the cars with tons of timing and high AFR etc etc to make power. This couldn’t be further from the truth and actually the exact opposite. We have tuned tons of these engines and have hundreds of thousands of miles between them in race and street conditions - this is a testament to the longevity and reliability our files provide.

While many of our competitors blindly add 5% across the board (screen tuning) to random ECU tables; we do the opposite. We have full access to the ECU, know how each table works and can and do modify every table that benefits this platform. Tuning these ECU’s is not as easy as just changing one table, when you change one, another is affected. We know which tables need to be changed together to maximize gains. We have seen companies add 6 degrees of timing to cars, that on 91 octane, pull 2 degrees in stock form. While the car may make power on the dyno, in real world conditions the ECU will learn out that additional timing for little to no gains. From our testing, leaving the timing table alone, or adding a degree or two provides the best results. We keep AFR stock or close to stock, running these cars lean does not provide safe, reliable gains.

Benefits

While almost everyones first and foremost goal when tuning their car is additional horsepower and torque, with our mapping, you will also find improvements in fuel economy and drivability. We can modify the SMG tables to shift quicker and drive better, something other tuners do not offer or charge additional for. We can eliminate speed limiters as well as raise the stock rev limiter, cold start delete is actively being developed.

Our touchscreen tablet is another added benefit over the competition. With competitors files, you have to either 1) live in close proximity to an authorized retailer to flash your car or 2) have a laptop which leaves room for error which could lead to no start or bricking your ECU. With our tablet it is very easy to use and leaves little room for error. You will read out your stock ECU and email us with that file. A member of the BrenTuning staff will then create a custom map for your car based off of your modifications and fueling and email it to you. You will load on the tablet and then install in your car. We are based in the US and have phone tech support M-F 10AM-5PM EST.

In house tuning

We have an in house Mustang MD150 Dynamometer which has been critical in our S85 development. While a good portion of our customers are from around the globe and utilize our handheld tablet, we do still love tuning the S85 in house. Dyno tuning is always going to be the best option for extracting the most power out of your vehicle. We can setup discounted tune days for those looking to and love to tune the S85 in house! In house tuning starts at $695 + $150/hour for use of the dyno. Dyno tuning is usually around 2-hours from start to finish. This would include one map.

Maintenance and upgrades

While we started this business primarily as a tuning shop, we have evolved into a one stop shop for maintenance, parts, tuning and more! We have the tools and experience needed to tackle any job; from diagnosis to engine swaps to clutch replacements, oil changes and more. If you are thinking about tuning, parts and install, let us know and we can get a package deal together for you!

Pricing

BrenTuning Handheld Tablet

Our standard pricing for our S85 Handheld tuner is $1095. We have been running a promotion for the past few months to get these in peoples hands which puts pricing $200 below retail at $895+ shipping. This is inline with, or cheaper than the competitiors options for a product that includes and does more.

Custom Dyno Tuning

Our facility is located in Charlton, MA and we are available for dyno tuning Monday - Friday. Pricing for a base flash is $695 and that would include one map. If you would like the car custom dyno tuned, it would be an additional $150/hour and usually takes around two hours. If you would like more than one dyno tuned map, you can purchase our touchscreen tablet for $350, additional dyno time will also be charged. We usually keep a few gallons of race gas here which can be purchased as well.

Testimonials

We have tested our cars up to 200MPH, on the track, 1/4 mile, 3rd party dynos, in house and on the street for thousands and thousands of miles. We have tuned every level of modification and have maps for anything you want. While many naysayers argue that we tune aggressively with high ignition targets, lean AFR etc — the amount of cars out there that we have tuned, with the combined miles driven, disprove that. Below are some videos, dyno graphs and M5Board member threads which detail our product and their experiences with BrenTuning

Couple cars came in recently for dyno tunes. This one was completely stock (6MT, Muffler Deletes, Carbon filters removed only) and made 35WHP over the stock. Fuel was a little lower quality and could have made a bit more with a better tank of gas.

Our handhelds are still on sale for $895 with four maps and our dyno tuning is still being offered at $695!

Done any tunes outside of the mainland US? I'd bought a TTFS tune for my E46 M3 which was done remotely and wouldn't mind tuning the SMG and the engine in my 2007 E60 M5. The car was originally delivered in the UK but is now located in Australia. Appreciate your advice.

Cheers,
Matt

Not a problem. We tune them all over the world and often ship handhelds to Australia. Shoot us an email or give us a call if you have any questions!

Do you have the unedited dyno chart for this car showing the multiple runs?
I should, we did lose a hard drive on the dyno computer recently, not sure if this was lost. I will try to find some time to pull them up.

What does your hand_held look like? Any upcoming $700 specials?

Hi. I live in Las Vegas where the temps range from 40f to 115f.
Car is a 2008 S85 MT. BMC filters with charcoal delete, RPI GTS stainless exhaust w resonators.
Not sure if it has been tuned by previous owner.
70k miles. 91 octane fuel. Car burns no oil.
What can I expect from your tune?
In Nevada we have to smog every year. Is this a problem w the tune?
Thank you. I'm very interested.

Hi Michael,

No issue with smog. We have ran into some issues with previously tuned cars, but we almost always can figure it out, sometimes just takes a little longer. I wouldn't worry about that until we get to that point.

91 octane really hampers power output. I would plan on gains in the 25WHP range over OEM mapping on 91 octane. We can create an additional blend map for 93/95 octane by adding Torco accelerator to your 91 octane. Works really well and provides much better gains over straight 91. Many of our 91 octane customers like this option. You can always switch to the straight 91 octane map if you run out of Torco or on long trips :).

Due to the recent influx of M5/M6 S85 Handheld tuners, we are going to offer them at an even lower discounted rate of $795 (MSRP is $1095)! The BrenTuning handheld can accommodate up to 4 maps and can be switched on the fly. Very easy to use, our handheld can provide you with mapping for any level of modification.
