Dinan—and a Little Oil Cooler

After two gruesome hours of driving my car to Santa Barbara for Bimmerfest, and at least 5 hours of setting up ourbooth, I had the honor of personally speaking to two intelligent representatives from Dinan. I spoke with Scott Leandres, the Director of Marketing and Communications for Dinan, and Philip Briseno, the mid-U.S. sales representative. Scott and Philip had much to say about the BMW 335i and a small teaser for their plans on the BMW E92 M3! As a BMW enthusiast, I once agreed that Dinan was slow to manufacturer aftermarket performance parts, but at the end of our discussion, I came to know the true meaning of their motto, "Performance without Sacrifice."

Looking around their booth, they had today's two hottest vehicles out there as a feature—the BMW E92 335i to the left and the new BMW E92 M3. I had learned a lot about Dinan and the technology they put into the BMWs. Their BMW 335i carried the power of the full 335i Dinan Performance Package, which included all performance and exterior parts. With an upgraded intercooler, software, suspension, wheel, and oil cooler (all made by Dinan, of course), the BMW 335i packs about 398 horsepower to the flywheel! Why the flywheel? BMW dynos every vehicle they make to the flywheel to make sure they're comparing to the actual BMW factory dyno.


Dinan's intercooler was an interesting topic during our little chat. Being almost twice as big (93% to be exact) larger than the stock intercooler, the 335i has an increased boost to 14 PSI from the stock 12.3 PSI! Intercoolers in general do not just increase horsepower that easily; it is a vital part of the car that keeps the air used in the engine cooler, making your vehicle more efficient. As your vehicle works more efficiently, it is able to provide more power for your vehicle—taking this knowledge into mind, Dinan made an extremely efficient and safe intercooler for the 335i enthusiasts.

How nice would it be to go from your stock 300 horsepower to an extraordinary 380 horsepower with a single tuner! With some serious research and development, Dinan created a tuner that increases your horsepower by about 80 horsepower, and you can expect to feel every horsepower when you're behind a Dinan-tuned 335i. With Dinan's Free-Flow Exhaust, you can expect a real 6-10 horsepower increase on top of the 80 that you would get with the Dinan tuner. Here's a little secret: Dinan is currently developing a strut tower brace and a ram air intake for the 335i to give you even more "umph" to your ride.


The infamous 335i oil cooler mystery for the 335i! I've been in the threads, I've constantly read about it, and I've got an explanation from both Scott and Philip—they don't know! It's a serious mystery when it comes down to figuring out why BMW included oil coolers on some 335s, and not on others. All Dinan knows is that if you don't have a factory oil cooler, you need one immediately. Not sure if you have a factory oil cooler? Check your passenger side's front portion of the wheel well—if there isn't a vent, you don't have an oil cooler. Anyway, imagine yourself on a track about to take your fourth lap, only to find your 335i in limp mode because it overheated—well, this is the problem that some people are having. The only real solution you have to fixing this infuriating problem is to get a new oil cooler! After all the information I got from Scott, I would definitely recommend that you go with Dinan's oil cooler if you had to get one. Their oil cooler is twice as big as the factory oil cooler, keeping your vehicle 20-30 degrees cooler than factory! Because of its efficiency over the factory oil cooler, you can drive your 335i as hard as you want for as long as you want at wide-open-throttle, and your 335i still won't overheat—this isn't an over-exaggeration. If you find that you need an oil cooler, why not get the best—get yourself a Dinan oil cooler to keep your vehicle healthy!
hat does Dinan springs, Dinan front and rear sway bars, Dinan negative camper plates and KONI readjustable shocks have in common? They take the ultimate driving machine to a new level of control. With every Dinan part (and KONI shocks) working together as a symphony, the Dinan's suspension portion of the package becomes so compliant that the comfort level and control of the 335i increases drastically. With the KONI readjustable shocks preset by Dinan, the front adjustable sway bars tuned, and the camber plates giving one-half more negative camber, the need for a Limited Slip Differential (LSD) practically becomes obsolete. Of course, that doesn't mean the LSD wouldn't help!

To top off the ultimate performance, Dinan has also developed the ultimate wheel and brake package! With Brembo Big Brake Kits customized by Dinan behind their 19-inch staggered 1-piece spread forged wheel, the 335i not only looks better but performs better as well. Always pursuing their objective, "Performance without Sacrifice," Dinan customized their Brembo brakes to be used without sacrificing the brake pad sensors. For the 1-piece forged wheels, the 19x9 front wheels are just under 20 pounds each, and the 19x9.5 rear wheels are exactly 20 pounds each—talk about light! The interesting thing I found out was that the front wheels use 265/30/19 tires, which exceed Tirerack.com's recommended 19-inch tire sizes! I had to ask Scott, "Why did you use 275 tires in the rear and 265 tires in the front? I have never seen someone exceed 245 before." He explained to me that Dinan tries to maintain a 10mm tire spread between the front and rears and a 30 style profile to maintain better control. He also explained to me that the 265 tires in the front fit because of the wheel. Unlike aftermarket wheel manufacturers who have to make one wheel for several makes, Dinan made this wheel specifically for the BMW E92 335i, enabling the use of 265/30/19 tires in the front.


here was so much more to be said about the features in the 335i, but Scott seemed pretty eager to talk me about their M3. So you could only wonder what they have done to the new M3 already—well…Nothing. It was what they have planned for the M3 that is what's making everyone so thrilled—think of this like an official Bimmerfest "teaser" M3! Naturally aspirated vehicles just work better because they're simple, yet efficient, so instead of adding some turbocharger or supercharger, Dinan wants to keep the simplicity and add much more horsepower. To do this, they plan on a larger displacement for the M3, making it equivalent to a V10 5.7L engine, pulling 600-628 horsepower (depending on the performance parts the M3 has), and more than 400 lbs. of torque! After obtaining the new M3 motor early, Dinan has been doing some research and development for about one year, specifically on this motor. Some features of the displacement of the new M3's engine are that it is stroked, it has lightweight forged pistons, and the crank shafts use the same material that BMW does! Best of all, this development is soon to be 50 state legal, so you won't have to worry about any vehicle legality issues in the future. The most interesting thing I've found out during our talk about the M3's engine displacement is that the lowest amount of torque this vehicle will pull it 400! This is why Scott emphasized that it is over 400 lbs. of torque because with the displacement, the M3 will never go below 400 lbs. of torque, no matter what RPM the M3 is running on.


With years of BMW racing knowledge, Dinan has proved to be much more than an aftermarket performance dealer. They provide powerful products, like their tuner, exhaust, and intake, to emphasize the "Ultimate" in BMW's "Ultimate Driving Machine". Sure, they may not come out with performance products as fast as other competitors, but that only means they have spent that much more time to develop a product that will give you the power you want, the safety you need, and an engine that will stay running for more than 100,000 miles without any problems! They're so confident in their products that Dinan will replace any damages, even your engine, if their products cause something to fail. It's no wonder why they're motto is "Performance without Sacrifice."
