I have exchanged a couple of emails with Shadowman from Discovery Automotive. He feels a functional oil cooler "kit" could be put together for our cars for about $1k, if we could get at least ten people together. These could be installed by "any competent mechanic" and would be plumbed in thru the lines going to the oil filter. Not much more detail than that at this time.
So, If we have ten interested people, I will see if Bill can put together more details for us before we put our credit cards where our mouths are!
Who is in?

ps: i'll be out of town until next friday, 7/28, so i won't be replying to any posts until then... Then again, i've written all that i know so far... This is just the thought stage.

Very interested. Count me in 98%. Would like to see the particulars of the kit, I understand the pricing. I assume this leaves the stock cooler in place.
Regards,
Jerry

I didn't want to get pushy with details until i knew if the GB was feesible. Once we get the required number of buyers, i'll get the details.
Yes, this does retain the OE cooler, from a parts perspective, not much different but much less labor. If we were to remove the oe cooler, you'd need a thermostat too. With it in place, the oe coolant/ oil heat exchanger would keep oil from getting too cold.

That was my guess, but I was saving questions until later!!

That is more or less the point of the thread, is there enough interest to move forward and get some design ideas. It seemed like there were several "oil temp at the track" threads a month or so ago, but not much interest here so far... The M3 has an air fed oil cooler, right? I wonder if that could be retrofitted, perhaps the oil lines would be more of a bolt on project?
Mike

When discussing options, I am not sure how what is now the remote T stat is going to work. Since the "new" oil cooler will operate off of the air/water charge cooler under the plenum, isn't it possible there will not be enough heat generated with an efficient new oil cooler? Original discussion was no separate T stat. Bill may need to consider a T stat for the new cooler so it determines its own temp setting, although you might be able to spec a higher T stat to compement the original cooler. Say original cooler opens at 85C, new cooler at 95-100C. Make sense????
Regards,
Jerry

Jerry,
with the oe oil/coolant heat exchanger in place, i do not think a thermostat would be needed. Lets say the new cooler is so good it cools the oil down to say, 120F, the OE oil/coolant heat exchanger will then heat it back up to 80C or so (oe coolant thermostat is 79C, iirc), understand my thinking? So IF the new aux oil cooler were that good, it would just be taking some cooling load off the radiator as well, in the winter, the engine thermostat should regulate everything to 'normal' coolant temp.

So the OE is both a cooler and heater? Then it keeps the temp within a certain range? If so, that would make sense (although not sure of the logic of doing it that way, but that is a separate issue) and I could see why a separate T stat would not be needed.
Regards,
Jerry
