Has anyone seen this gulf version 11427511171 in person referenced above and listed for the 540? I'm wondering if it is and additional inlet and outlet. When I look at the pic's here RealOEM.COM * BMW E39 540i LUBRICAT.SYST.-OIL FILTER, OIL PIPES for the gulf version 540 and then here RealOEM.COM * BMW E39 M5 LUBRICAT.SYST.-OIL FILTER, OIL PIPES for the US E39 M5 I see no difference in the inlet and outlet setup. Each has one inlet and two outlets shown. Maybe the first link for the 540 is not the gulf version shown as the standard has the same p/n as the Us std M5 housing(probably not), but I wanted to confirm an additional set of inlet and outlet connections on this gulf version as I'm in the process of planning an aftermaket oil cooler of some type like the B&M supercooler or something.

Hey Gsfent can you pm me your installer info and final price if you don't mind and give me an update if your happy with your setup?

Install was a one off, so if you want him to do it, I have to get a price.

We haven't totalled it up yet, I still don't have a bill for labor!! He did spend some time figuring out where everything goes, and I know he removed the front bumper to do the install. If and when the SC kit from ESS comes out, we may have to move it around a little, it now sits dead center and low in front of the rad for plenty of fresh air.

From memory, parts were around $400-$500, included the oil cooler, new oil filter housing with remote for lines, lines themselves, and some misc. stuff.

I haven't tracked the car, but during the hot months, it seems to work fine. I note the 90 C degree T stat (built into the oil filter housing IIRC) seems to work, although there is a bit of delay from the reading to the opening. Seems to open closer to 98 or 99, then temp drops about 10 degrees almost immediately. Installer surmises simply slow reaction of the temp sensor to actual temps, but in all other respects, I have no issues.

Holds about 1.5 extra quarts, not a bad thing, although makes oil changes a little less complete since the cooler doesn't drain. But I am on a 7500 mile interval anyway.

PM for more details, or if you want to see the car.

Regards,
Jerry

any further updates on this Jerry?
I am interested in an oil cooler as I will probably be tracking my car more. Gets quite hot here too.
side note, I will have to investigate the tstat too, might only open partially as oil temp mostly 94-99C, even at highway speeds.

Nothing further to report.
In normal driving, it is transparent, can't tell it is there. When summer returns, it should help a little, and if I track the car, I should have a huge safety margin.

Jerry

I ordered the "Gulf" version of the oil filter housing that has a built in thermostat and outs for an oil cooler. About $350 from your local Stealership. I intend to swap locations of the oil filter housing with the power steering reservoir, then run XRP HS-79 hosing from the new housing to a Mocal 16 or 19 row oil cooler mounted behind the kidneys. This is pretty much what T-Trim 540 and Gsfent have done. Total cost with housing, oil cooler and hosing and fittings is about $700, and it looks pretty easy to install. I'm doing this at the same time as my ESS SCer install.

BTW, the part number for the Gulf version of the oil filter housing ends in 171, not 169.

Hey Mike. Not sure exactly what you mean. There is no specific BMW oil cooler for the e39 M5 other than the under-plenum heat exchanger that, with an external oil cooler, can and should be removed ala Dinan. Thus, one has to use something else, and Mocal is as good as any other. In terms of the hosing, again, BMW makes oil lines for the standard oil filter housing, but as far as I know, there are no specific oil lines for an oil cooler for the E39 M5. XRP HS-79 is pretty much the best lightweight hosing out there and used on all the D/A Sc'd beasts.

Are you planning on removing the factory cooler then?

The "gulf" oil filter housing is a 540i part. Incidentally both the M5 and 540i the same shrouding/brackets as the M5 to hold the a/c condenser and pusher fan. If you notice to the side of your A/C condenser there is a big open space, this is where the oil (and trans, which fits in the lower section of the opening) cooler goes on the gulf cars. Im sure you can use a much bigger rectangular (vs square on the factory part) oil cooler since you have no need for a trans cooler. I've been looking into doing this myself, as I track my M5 quite a bit and regularly see oil temps between 230 and 260F when running flat out.

Check RealOEM for all the part #s, but I assure you the parts do exist. From memory; there are 2 oil lines, a bracket, a bunch of hardware items/clips, and the cooler along with the filter housing + tstat. I'll search and post the P/N's later on.
