I'm open to suggestions if you have a link to the parts required to do this less expensively. It seems that one issue is taping into the oil filter lines, which are not a standard off the shelf part. Compared the the $4000 dinan oil cooler, i thought 1k seemed pretty reasonable. Other bmw vendors sell kits for 'simpler' cars, like the US E36 M3 for the $500-800 range.

as a refresher, ard posted above, #20, about tapping into the filter based on realoem. It would still be a few hundred dollars for oil cooler, hoses, etc. so a kit for grand doesn't seem all that out of line to me either. Rev, if you can hook us up with a plug and play kit for a lot less, I am listening!!!!

Jerry

I will have to research this, as I too would like an oil cooler, but will not spend a g for it.

After doing a search and revisiting this thread almost a year and a half later (now April, 2008) still no Oil Cooler.
Any news on this? Anyone done it for less than $1000k. Summer is around the corner and the track is calling!
nothing on my end, getting kind of bored with the e39, so no motivation from me. The only good option that is readily available is from dinan, and instead of putting another $4k into the e39, i'd rather buy a new m3 for track days!

hey mottati: I was kinda toying with the idea of making the e39 more of a 'ring taxi track machine for the occasional private track rental days with the buddies, but that aint gonna happen without an oil cooler. Its been fun in the past running down all sorts of hot 2 seat sports cars with 4 guys in the M5 waving goodbye out the back window!!
If worse comes to worse I can always get a shop I know to put something together, but hate to be the guinea pig!
I guess if you are the only place in the world that makes this, you can ask $4k for it! Its probably $400 or less in parts plus a couple hrs labor.
if it came up, i'd probably buy one! My e34 has a nice large air to oil cooler under the rad, nice design, takes it longer to warm up, but never gets too hot. This is what we need to add to the e39.

I'm sure there are plenty of places that could take the stock oil filter return hose, cut it in two, put AN fittings on it, which could then lead to an oil cooler.
Figure another $200 or so for AN lines/fittings, and you've got all the hardware for ~$500
I'm curious if the oil filter is before or after the stock oil cooler. If it's before the stock cooler, then the stock cooler will just warm it back up again.
If there was a way to bypass the stock cooler, then it may help reduce the coolant temps a bit too, since it's not absorbing heat from the oil also.
Looking at the stock oil cooler on Real OEM, I bet you could cut the coolant lines off the cooler, weld a tube to connect them, then reinstall it. Oil would still run through it, but no more engine coolant. http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...65&hg=11&fg=30
It also shows a "Control Valve" I wonder if it controls the oil flow through the cooler, maybe it can be modified so it bypasses the cooler.

That Oil filter housing has a thermostat on it ...
I understand the oil filter housing choice ( I agree), but why the E60 oil cooler? I wouldn't think there is any compatibility between the E39 and the E60. Wouldn't a Mocal or Earl's oil cooler be better able to be chosen to fit? Or have you measured teh E60 cooler and determined it will fit in our cars?
Regards,
Jerry
