Best headlight replacement?

I want to replace the headlights on my '01 Jet Black M5 - the current ones are OEM and the plastic is faded beyond hope. They are HID and auto-leveling.

I would like to replace them, either with or without clear corners, but I DON'T want to lose HID or auto-leveling. Is this possible without spending thousands of dollars on OEM?

+1 - the prices for oem are disgusting...

what do you mean by faded? ...if it's chips, you can work that out

When I say faded I mean hazy, I buffed them back to clear years ago but without the UV coating that is apparently on them when new they deteriorated back to hazy again. Car is otherwise 100% so it kills me to look at those lights!

I like the look of some of the other headlight options but don't want to sacrifice HID or auto-leveling.

I have a set of oem lights from my 2000, only have 15k miles on them and they are close to perfect, I replaced with hella angel eyes. Make me an offer if interested.
They are HID and auto leveling.

Hella brand is arguably the best. $510 each, but hey they are the nicest.

+1

The only headlight setup you want to have on an E39. Don't buy the Xenon controllers, however. Get a set of 55W high intensity Xenon low beams with lightweight controllers. Much better technology, and makes an incredible difference when driving at night.

Along the same lines, I wanted to open up my headlights to have lightwerks replace my projector. Has anyone tried or succeeded at opening their headlight casing? I don't want to switch to DEPOs but would like to do the upgrade...

This is exactly the issue that many of us have. Hellas are nice and all, but you'd be paying 4 figures for 6-year old technology. Modern projectors are way ahead in terms of both quality and light output.

I am in talks with 2 companies doing projector retrofit to DJ Auto headlights. These look just like the hella units but have way better quality than Depo. Both of these companies agree that it is nearly impossible to do the projector upgrade to the Hellas because they are very hard to open and work with.
