Engine light on the dash!

Hi guys, just signed up as a new member. What a great site!
I upgraded my 535 E39 to a 2001 E39 M5 a month ago.
Yesterday the orange engine light came on upon start up and has been on ever since. Any ideas what the problem is? Could it disappear without a visit to the dealer?
Thanks

There is a mulitude of reasons why the SES light has come on, mine came on because of the O2 sensors, but it's certainly a job to be looked at by someone who can read and understand the codes. TBH I use an Indy because they are more knowledgeable than the main dealer nearest to me.

Do a search on SES Light or Emissions light etc and you wil find loads of potential reasons.

Re: Engine light on the dash!

Because it's an '01, I'll assume it's not under warranty, but if you've had it for a very short time, I'd bet that the dealer would read out the codes to tell you what it is.

If they are not willing to do that for free, either find somebody near you that has a Peake reader, or get one yourself to get the codes out...

Good Luck!

Oh, and welcome to the M5, and to m5board.com

Mine does this after a fill up, found that if I take the gas cap off, turn it 180 degrees and re install, light goes off after 2-3 re starts.

Take it Sherburn in Elmet to see Paul Metcalf. He'll sort you out.

Yes, your gas tank has to have constant pressure. If you fill up with the car on the light will also come on. This is a common SES light for new owners.

So many things can trigger this light your best bet is just to get the codes read or try to trouble shoot it yourself.

Edit: Haha I made the same mistake of posting in an old thread that got dug up.
