http://www.ideaphile.com/bmw/540-obc.html

the car is 540 but I bet it would work on an M5 too.

Re: has anyone seen/tried that? read OBD on your dashboard screen

Yep...this is well known but it certainly doesn't hurt to have the link reposted every now and then. It does work on the M5 and is interesting although it is not truly OBD info but rather OBC (on-board computer) info.

We should add that not all the test numbers mentioned for the 540i match the M5 OBC numbers, at least on '03 models.

I tried some of the various tests (can't remember specifically which ones) and they weren't even close to being the same readouts as on the 540i.

Like the site says, try playing with this at your own peril.

Test 2 has been around forever on BMWs, and is kind of cool to look at.

Re: has anyone seen/tried that? read OBD on your dashboard screen

On the subject of test Nr.2 (instrument check), has anyone noticed that on the bottom right side of the instrument panel, the letters "P", "R", "N", "D" etc. (reffering to automatic transmission) appear? I was wondering why does such a display exist in a M/T equipped car.

Moreover, could someone please "decode" Test Nr.1 and specifically, the "K" "BMWTNR", "CI", "DI", "BI", "HW", "SW", "M", "S", "CAN" and "AEND" elements?

Thank you!
