Exclamation e39 MAFS problems after K&N installation

Hey all,

My 2000 M5 is limping around after installing K&N's. Took it to my dealer, and they say that BOTH Mass Air Sensors are bad, and need to be replaced (2 months after warranty ended), and "oh, by the way - the fact that you're running K&N's is probably the problem. BMW US told us that they have seen the K&N's cause this problem numerous times now".

I called K&N, and of course, they say their standard line (our filters do not cause mass air sensors to fail), but BMW US says they do.

I've seen the posts from others who say pull the sensors out, clean them (with simple green, and/or contact cleaner), and this did not solve my problem.

Now, I'm thinking that I don't want to just re-install BMW MAFS ($1000 for both), but might want to install some after-market (more durable) sensors, but can't find any. Any suggestions?

thanks.

Well, for starters, get rid of the K&N's. The oil from the filters gets deposited on the MAFS wires and causes them to not work. Put the OE paper filters back in.

Next, find somewhere else to buy your new MAFS. Just buy the parts and replace them yourself. You obviously already know how to replace them, since you already did the cleaning. Someone said Crevier BMW sold the pair for just over $500. It'd be worth calling somewhere else to save about $500, IMO.

Re: e39 MAFS problems after K&N installation

Thanks to everyone who replied. I've used K&N filters in many of my vehicles (including my motorcycles) for years, and was expecting more/better from both them, and the bmw (bosch oem) MAFs. I found a better (though, as expensive as replacing both MAFs from my local dealer), and it's at Dinan. They have some high-flow MAFs, and along with the chip & other goodies from their shop, I'm just going to spend some time getting dirty under the hood for a while.

if anyone is interested.

thanks again!

Donny, I could be wrong, but it sounds like the Dinan pieces are just the MAFS housing/tubes that run between the airboxes and the intakes. The description says they "have been designed to accomodate the stock electronics." Sounds to me like you still have to have the Bosch OE sensors. One of the guys who has Dinan stuff in his car could probably confirm this one way or the other.

Yup, after looking into this further (and talking to two different people), it turns out that not only this is true, but also you can only install their Air Mass Meters if you're using their Cold Air Intake System (another $2k). So, maybe that *is* just a bit more than I want to bite off right now. :-|
