one of my buddies just got a 98 528i and has found a bomb deal on a 2001 M5 engine, would this work and if so what needs to be done and does it cost a grip to do?

I know its gonna be a waste but he hates driving stick so he wants to keep it auto, is it possible? of course hes gonna get exhust and intakes and stuff like that but will it be a problem with the onborad cars computers chip?

he's already bought the stuff on the outside to change it into a M5 he's going now for the engine, anyone with any info would be of help...thanks

I'm not 100% sure, but I do not think the 528 has enough reserve strengh in the gearbox to handle the power. He might have to look at the setup Alpina (was it them?) used with their high output V8 in the Z8, with an auto. If he wants M5 performance with an auto, I recomend selling the 528, buying a 540iA, and then getting it superchargered by Dinan. Look at www.Jimmy540i.com for some info on that. IMHO, the transplant might be cost prohibitive.

This is all very possible. I am assuming he got that amazing M5 motor deal off of eBay?

Best thing is to call a great shop to do it. Where is he located? If in CALI, we can do the work, no problem.

You will need to change these items for sure, some others as well:

- Motor
- ECU
- Harness
- Guage Panel
- Trani
- Drive-shaft
- Headers/Manifolds
- Mid-section of exhaust
- Suspension (front is MUCH heavier)

Thanks

Not sure that is possible... the 528 has rack and pinion steering... will not be able to stuff the 4.9 (or the 4.4 for that matter) into the car...
