how do you replace front windshield trim that's cracking?

I have a 2000 E39 M5. Front windshield is fine, but the trim around it is cracking. The trim piece was priced at $41.95. Does anyone have a solution to this problem?

I have recently replaced mine and all that is required to purchase is the trim piece and if you have standard tools, you can perform the procedure fairly easily and quickly.
