New Owner SMG question

Hi Guys,

I just wanted to introduce myself as a new E60 M5 owner (luv it, luv it, luv it), but I do have a couple of questions about the SMG. In "Drive" from 1st to 2nd sounds like the engine is really racing before its changes up then then it feels like i have stepped in cement during the change, after 2nd everything seems OK in the Higher gears. I have tried all the drive logic settings without much luck. I have read elsewhere that this is normal? It only seems bad from 1-2nd, do I really have to forgo Drive and only use the paddles for smooth driving?

Also is there a SMG for dummies?

Hello and welcome! A few thoughts:

1.If you are in drive mode you need to modulate the throttle to get the car to rev and shift. We have named it the "kick down" button for lack of a better term. It is the small "click" you feel when you depress the throttle far enough to get moving. If you are using the throttle and do not go down far enough the car will not accelerate like it is capable of. I am not exaggerating when I say that you need to floor it with "stabs" to get the most out of the gears. the dummy box is otherwise only concerned with fuel efficiency. That's why you find yourself in 6th gear when you are only going 50 mph!

2. You might try calibrating your tranny. While traveling in the car between 40-90 mph throw the car in neutral, depress both paddle shifters for 3-5 seconds, release them and put the car back into a gear. this will recalibrate your transmission.

3. I assume your software has been updated and your SZL censor has been changed out by the dealer. this caused problems with most of the car's systems early on.

4. You have an M5, shift it yourself! It is by far the most fun you will have with it. I only use D5 when on a long highway jaunt when I want to chill. In the city it's usually S5 or S6 all the way.

5. When in doubt, have a knowledgeable tech or SA from the dealership drive your car with you in it. Ask them about their opinion.
6. When shifting yourself, lift off of the throttle just a bit after you shift and the car finds a gear. this method was more of a requirement early but it still helps IMO. Good luck. In the future, you should try a thread search here to read over all of this stuff that we have already written. I think it's why you did not get any other responses. take care!
