Smell of fuel??

Dear all,

I have been getting a smell of petrol from the back part of the engine bay. It seems to be an intermittent (leak) as the odour is not always present. Very confusting! The engine runs as good as ever too!

When I took it the the dealers the damn smell went away LOL now its back

Have any fellow M3ers smelt this smell??

My M3 ran very rich, which always caused the car to smell like raw, unburned fuel. It was heavily modified though, which did not help. I also had problems with the gas tank. One of the seals had aged and started to dry out, causing vapors to leak out. Whatever it is have it checked out ASAP, you don't want to mess with the fuel system.

FUEL SMELL SORTED!!

I located the leaking flexible fuel pipe that runs from the end of the fuel rail by the bulkhead to the solid pipe attached to the car body. There are actually 2 pipes here-a fuel feed and a return pipe. BMW do a kit to replace these pipes at around £20.

I put the new pipes on myself. The job itself was not difficult, it was just the amount of stuff i had to remove to get at it....all the intake pleneum and intake hoses etc etc. but at least it smells nice now
