Videoing Whilst Driving

Is this illegal or legal ??

Either videoing by the passenger or a camera mount in the car...
Just wondered, as I'm going to buy a mount for in the car use... can they actually do anything if stopped ?? Are they entitled to look at the video footage...

Did any gumballers get pulled and asked to remove cameras ???

Re: Videoing Whilst Driving

I am 99% sure its legal in the UK.

I remember watching a program with a do-gooder old man who drove around with a camcorder on his dash. When he saw speeding/dangerous drivers he handed the 'evidence' to the police. As this was his 'hobby' for a few years, it can't have been illegal.

You could get done for Driving without due care + attention if they suspect you are fiddling with it whilst driving erratcially - and if they are in a foul mood, they could claim cruising at 70 mph in a straight line 'erractic' just to pull you over.

I imagine that if you were involved in a car accident that they could confiscate the camcorder as evidence, but I dont think they could stroll up to your car and demand the camcorder if you are driving safely (I doubt they could even have it for speeding).

One thing you could consider seriously is that I dont think DIGITAL evidence is admissable in a court of law in the UK (do check this yourself). As such if you had a digi camcorder and were caught after an accident, even if the cam showed you were speeding, it would not be admissable in court, not even mentionable. So using a digi cam not only makes more sense in terms of vid production on a PC, but also offers protection from incriminating yourself.

To be honest, I find the best thing to do in these situations is to call into the police station and ask them. They will not lie to you, and will give you legally correct information - something most on here are not qualified to give.

Hope that helps,

Stu

Re: Videoing Whilst Driving

Video footage cannot be used as a base for prosecution as it is too easy to edit.

That's what I've heard anyway..

Re: Videoing Whilst Driving

Not at all, it's a pleasure.

I don't know how seriously you are taking this, and what output quality you are after, but you have to be really careful with how you mount cams to adsorb shocks. I'm sure there must be many hardware solutions out there, though it's not something I have researched.

What is starting to look interesting is 'affordable' video processing software - take apples new shake for example

http://www.apple.com/shake/quicktour...ncedimage.html

look at the video smoothing demo toward the end of this clip - tailor made for in car footage!

Just stuff to think about,

Stu
