Gumball Reminiscences

Hello kids,

Greetings from the Volvo V70R, the crashed one that has been the butt of a few jokes on this forum and elsewhere!

I am writing about the Gumball and keen to hear as many stories and anecdotes as possible, the high lows for the participants and the funny memories, both urban myth and reality that you gathered along the way.

Will hope to see you this weekend at the reunion, but in the meantime please get in touch. Experience of Gumball parties indicates they are not an ideal working environment!

Also trying to contact a few guys - the lads in the taxi, Aidan in the Murcielago, and a few others. If you can help let me know. I hear the lads in the taxi put pics up on a blueyonder URL - anyone now the full address?

Take care, talk soon,

Clement

Why not ask Nick at Gumball HQ? I'm sure he can put you in contact with those you need to...

... and welcome!

I never heard - did you find a replacement car?

Re: Gumball Reminiscences

Some gossip I got through a mail of one person who saw the Belgian TV footage for mthe event:

okay, the gumball part now:

- Kim Schmitz told before the camera that he doesn't like paperwork, when he was
stopped by the police he said he first took alot of money and counted note by note
(money) untill the policeman said "stop"

okay nothing special, best part has to come:

- he gave the police 50 euro and asked them to stop a black porsche 996 TT behind
Kim for at least half an hour, they kept that porsche for almost an hour at the
side....that guy was pissed

- In morocco, Kim wanted to pass a car but that car was in his way.....he hit that
car slightly so it was on the side and continued his way....but that car was an
anonymous police car with the mayor in it, they tried to pursue him but Kim probably
drove too fast :-) a few gumballers who drove behind Kim were stopped as they were
looking for Kim. Kim's car had only a few scratches, he said

in case you are interested: Kim paid a total of 5000 euro for driving too fast (he
was stopped about 10 times)

Wow, that was cheap. In Finland you don't have to do much speeding when one ticket alone can exceed that amount!

Re: Gumball Reminiscences

Thanks Gustav, thats just the sort of stuff I ma looking for.

RE the Volvo, it was magnificent. Brisk and comfortable, it was perfect, particulary for the long night section. It was going great up until we had to move on to the spacesaver wheel. We did about 1100 miles on that at 80-100 and then decided that discretion was the better part of valour when we reached Barcelona. At Barcelona we hired a VW Passat and proceeded to Cannes!

I think a lot of people were quite surprised at the pace of the Volvo - we heard allegations that we had flown it to Marbella, or that it was a different car and we had swapped the plates! One Ferrari driving chap we spoke to asked us what time we made it to Marbella....

"About quarter past twelve...and you..?"
"Oh mid afternoon, half threeish. That must have been tough on you guys, getting in so late. Did you go straight to the party or to bed?"
"Straight to bed, it seemed sensible, as it was just after midday. We then got up for the party at about 9pm."

However it would have to be said that the Volvo was definitely not a bird-puller...
