I love the commentary - and repect - going on in the post...
My hat goes off to the M's at high speeds (low speeds, the track, everything for that matter!) but check out this video (11.23 1/4 mile pass). I did some investigating and found out the car only had a K2 Package (ECU, Pulley, ahd Headers). This is about $6-7K in mods.
It's not hard to argue that you can achieve more power from a FI engine.
Turn up the boost up a notch and you got another 50 horses.
With the M5 it's just hard to tune since the engine is highly tuned.
The only way I can see happening without taking out the block is either NOS, camshaft, or some head work.
Anything but NOS will ruin your drivability.
I agree with your comments. My point to all this was it is often crazy to compare a "stock" car to one with modifications. I could find lots of Civic's, Neon's, WRX's, and STi's that could blow away E55's, M5's/M6's, Z06's (whatever) but guess what; they are not my cup of tea...
In terms of M mods, what is so undesirable about cam/head work (and how much $) to make them less driveable?
I am a Minnesota native, but no longer live there. In what part of the state are you? SchnelleM5, who frequents the E39 part of this forum, is in Owatonna and has organized some terrific scenic drives: TARGA MINNESOTA: PICS Of Our "Scuderia M5" In Action(41 Large Pics)

Thanks for the note! How could you leave such a wonderful place as Minnesota (LOL!)?
I live on the St. Paul side of the Twin Cities. I believe a co-worker has met SchnelleM5 (when he met him he had a 360 Spyder and a few Mazarati's). I belive Schnelle is in the medical profession...
Would be interested in talking cars/getting together.

He is an M.D. I didn't know Al was a F-car man.... Where has he been BTW??

Well, any NA modifications will cost more money than FI since there is more work involved.
Camshaft, itself will not make the car less driveable but it's the camshaft profile. Say if you want high horsepower from a cam then you would want something that provides higher lift and longer duration at higher RPM when compared to stock cam. During high RPM it's fine but when driving around town where air intake isn't travelling as fast, say as 6000 RPM, then the engine will have a hard time compressing the intake charge; therefore, you loose power and throttle response.
Please keep in mind that with the "modified" profile there is more overlapping to increase to ram air effect.
Hi TK:
Welcome to the Board. I usually get together with Al and a few other
members of the Board once a month for lunch or dinner in or around
Minneapolis. We are always looking for new recruits no matter what
make or model you drive. In the winter we usually just meet socially.
In the Spring Al puts together some very entertaining drives. If you are
interested, PM me and I'll be sure and let you know when and where
we will be meeting this month.
