Hey Graeme,

Your stealing my heart with this car. My first new car was a '77 Firebird. My father had a great '68. One of my favorite cars of all time is a '68 Camaro.

The Firebirds had a series, which included the Trans Am and the "Formula 400". The Formula was a sleeper. The motor had plenty of room to build. If you are restoring the car, keep the motor and build/bore it and try to bring it to stock looks. Include the GM rims and body molding.

Good luck!

P.S. Lets get together when you get into LA.

A little update. Just got back into town about a week ago after spending the summer hanging out in CA with Baller and Myke. Got a few things done including putting in a new windshield, bolting in some racing seats and 4 point harnesses and I ordered a new motor. It should be in by next week sometime. I went with a 540 cubic inch Chevy big block with 677hp and 582tq, aluminum heads, full stainless roller rockers, forged crank. In case anyone is interested in the specs of the motor and its internals, here they are:

The place I got it from had a bunch of inventory on hand so they needed to get rid of some stuff so I got a really good deal. It is going to come with a 950 dominator carb and it's turnkey, so I'll just drop it in. I'm going to pair it with a Turbo 400 tranny (which, from what I've heard were overbuilt in the first place and should be able to handle all the power fine).

I was thinking pretty hard about rebuilding the Pontiac 455 motor currently in it, but it just didn't make sense because of their propensity for catastrophic failure since they inherently weaker than their Chevy counterparts (454/502). It should be a fun motor to have in this car. I'll add some pics of it in the car when I get it in within the next 3 weeks or so.

Update:

So I've got the car in the shop having the motor installed. Just waiting for the ceramic coated headers, subframe connectors and Flowmaster Mufflers to come in. I decided to pair the motor with a Turbo 400 with a 3000 stall. I expect the car to be driveable within the next 10 days and will post back once I get her back.

On a side note, I will be selling the old 455 motor paired to the Turbo 350 with a shift kit

Numbers of interest are as follows
Date Code: K092 = November 1972
Casting Number: 485428 = 1974 engine

I do have other information on the engine if anyone is interested PM me

Btw, think I may be coming back in 2 weeks for one more football game if y'all will be around.

Cool Project, I looked into getting a 68-72 Nova last summer for a while but decided to mod my M and save for an E36. I still want to build a Nova/Camaro with a BB and Turbo 400 at some point to cruise and work on.

Very cool to see M5 guys appreciate the classics! That was actually the reason I got out of my last BMW (335i) - so I could buy a truck to haul around my project car, parts car, etc... 1969 Hemi Charger 4spd, track pack - red on black, black vinyl top, black R/T stripe - all matching numbers - originally sold in my hometown also and only one original owner previous to my with only 59k original miles... quite the gem!

A shot when it was first taken to start restoration and a pic of one about a month ago after all the metal work was finally complete...
