I don´t think BMW would leave the high end V12-market to Mercedes and Audi, even when they offer the CS. I´m quite certain that we will see a turbocharged V12-engine, as all the other engine alternatives in the new 7-series, with around 500-530 bhp to compete with the S600.
Agree,also they would not want to lose Asian markets which are obsessed with V12s and a lot of 7 series sold there ,were 760s.

Sigh... After reading the press release again, it appears the initial versions will not include the 730d. Oh well, hopefully the twin turbo V8 gets some good gas mileage.

The 1st stage of this new engine N74B60 will have 544 hp and the 2nd stage 571 hp! My personal tip: The new M5 will have more than 580 hp...

Hello Claus, thanks for the information..... This was the first time I heard of the N74B60...
So dicephering BMW engine codes....
N74 = V12 with turbocharging with direct injection
B = Gasoline
60 = 6.0 liter displacement
Will the last 2 letters for the 760 be M1, M2 or M1, U1?
More importantly, I hope that you are right about the M5 / M6 having more than 580 hp.....
Do you have sources that can confirm which engine code best represents the new engine??
S83B55T1 = (M Engine, V10, 5.5 liter displacement with direct gasoline injection)
S64B50O1 = (M Engine, V8, 5.0 liter displacement with direct injection gasoline turbocharged)
If you can get the first letter and the following 2 numbers....we will know the nature of the new M's engines.

From all what I heard/read in the "German scene" the new M5 will still have a V10 - of course with at least 550 hp. On the other hand: Never had the 7 series top model more hp than a M5 produced at the same time*. Audi has now with its new RS6 580 hp - why should BMW offer "only" 550 hp in 2011?
*Exception: It can happen for the first time when next year the 760i comes on the market and the new F10 in 2011.

Can't see BMW doing this....this is shooting behind the duck. The M5 is basically unchallenged, they don't need to spend the money to make the E60 M5 more competitive.
BMW is smart, they will focus the resources on the new M cars. With the ///M3 out the door, they should be right in the middle of the F10 M5 / F12 M6 development.

Hey T Bone,
I'm not a GM guy, however, as discussed in another thread that went South, the M5 is being challanged by the Cadillac CTS-V. New reports from Germany (I don't have access to those reports ) is that the Caddy is running very strong and surpassing the M5 in many categories after some minor tunes. I am not saying this makes the caddy an overall better car, but the LS4 can't be ignored. It is supposed to be a tuners dream.
Maybe BMW will look to stay a step ahead. Or, as I guess you might surmise, they'll deal with it on the next generation M5.
Food for thought.
