Although most of it will be consumed by the navigation system. The Nav, however, looks promising.
Yup, correct. THe press release says:
"The new 7 comes standard with a 40-GB hard drive, which provides fast access
to navigation data and space for approximately 13GB allocated to music
storage."
So that means room for around 2500 mp3 songs, which is ok. But of course it would be better if it were bigger

Unfortunately, automotive electronics are at least 2 generations behind consumer electronics.
40 Gig HDD that is so 2001..... 8-13 gigs free on a $100,000+ car? Unacceptable.

You're absolutely right, but just buy an iPod for a couple euro's/dollars and you'll be fine .
About the design itself: I don't realy like it. Way too conservative for my liking, but you could imagine that on forehand . Hopefully the new 5-series does 'sparkle' a bit more. I absolutely love the design showed at the Gina Light concept so hope is not lost .

The first mod for me, if I get the new M6, will be a HDD upgrade. Assuming it uses the standard IDE interface, swap in a 250 gig HDD.
BMW tries to be technically savvy but to tech people, this is kinda of a joke.

I like it, and am surprised to say I'm thinking seriously about the 730d (if offered in the US) vs the 750. I'm first on the list at my dealer to get the new 7 series, and the 730d would be a perfect 'highway cruiser' and run about town car for me. I'll get my sports car fix with the Cayman RS I've got on order (hopefully due next March...)
Again - two cars necessary to replace the "M".

I wonder if the centre console is high enough to rest your arm
Two things I dislike are the visible exhausts and the fact that the hood doesn't run down the bumper including the grilles. The massive high bumpers give it a cheap look IMO like on french cars where they try to cover as much of the car as possible in plastics to keep the cost down.
Also very, very very sad that they have added more buttons around the iDrive. That's like admitting that all those people who can't work iDrive (stupidly) are right.
