how can the R8 nurburgring time be slower than the fat RS4? these "official" nurburgring times mean nothing... there are way to many factors at play...

. Note that even on this list, you get varying performance for the same vehicle. So condition of track, vehicle, and driver skill and familiarity with the vehicle can all lead to different results. Nordschleife excluding GP track, 20.6 kms:

Having test ridden on the Nordschleife, I think these figures mean a lot. As general indicators. Of course, like anything, there will be questions and variations in conditions, vehicle prep, tires - type and condition, weather, time of day, driver, etc.

No need to discredit the entire lineup, just because one time doesn't make sense. Just need more information...I agree, one would expect a mid engine R8 to outperform a relatively portly RS4.

It isn't ..there are no proper times done for the R8 yet,but it has beaten the 997turbo,997gt3,lambo gallrdo and 430 on every track it has been on so far.

Also just read CAr magazine performance car of the year 2007..winnner is R8 and it got to within 1 second of a gt3rs and gallardo superleggra (both running on semi slicks) on their laps.
The Uk magazines are unaminous in their favourite performance car of the year.

All these damn numbers!!!

34698 hp!
0-60 in 3.23525 seconds!
And the most important quantitative car-measurement ever... Nordschleife time! In 7.395835 minutes!

I guess in our day and age, it is really easy to compare cars by numbers, especially with this horsepower war. IMO, the only truly important number is the weight of the vehicle, which at 3400 pounds is not bad for a sports car.

Lets be a little more qualitative... not many of us have driven the R8. For me, I don't like the way Audi cars perform near the limit, but for daily or spirited driving, they are quite good. I liked the new Audi TT that I test drove extensively (for my girlfriend).

No offense in any way to the thread creator, but it really is slightly silly to ask people's opinions on a new car purchase; on a forum, or in any other way. Who cares what other people think? It isn't going to be their car, it is going to be yours! Here is how you know if you should buy it: go drive it- and if you feel you like it, and you must have it, then buy it. If you have any doubt, or feel you need convincing- it is not for you... then wait for the next new thing to come along, which in our day and age, will be in 1 1/2 weeks. Repeat procedure.

First, numbers are good - they give you a hint, not the hole truth, but at least a hint.

Second of all, "I dont like the way Audis handle" is not a very good measurment of R8, since this is something quite different - drive a Lamborghini or mid-engined Ferrari and you'll find it more comparable to R8 than any other Audi ever made..

And why shouldnt people have doubts about their purchases? Its a lot of money after all.. No, no one is going to buy an R8 just from what they've read in this thread, but its a good add-on to other impressions.

Finally writing in bold makes absolutely no sense to me

Agree 100% here.

I often sigh when I read a thread title like this. Ofcourse, its all good and cool to contemplate cars with boardmembers and its enjoyable.

But as soon as this starts to become some semi-scientific way of trying to prove which car you should get, I get the image of someone on one side being smart enough to have the money for such a machine but on the other hand not bright enough to make their own decisions.

Come on, its YOUR car. I can't remember the last time I went 0-100 flat out (not a boy racer) so I don;t really care if a car does that in 4 or 4,5 secs.

Ringtimes are also EXTREMELY subjective especially for someone in the US. You guys get the cheap gas, we get the Ring.

Let us know if you bought it and how it drives. That would be great.

Wout
