I'm having problems with my comfort access. When locking the car either by touching the handle (every handle) or using the key button the car immediately unlocks itself and makes a clicking noise for 20 seconds or so. I also had a problem with the car not recognising the key was present and refused to start until I had placed the key on the steering column. I have finally managed to get the car locked at home but obviously I can't use it as I may not be able to secure it when parking up.
I can't get the dealership to have a look at it for nearly three weeks which is a piss take but there you are. I'll update the thread with results/solutions when it's all sorted out. Until then I'll be driving my trusty E36 325.
I've changed the key fob battery and it's better but still not quite working properly. The car is on its second battery and gets regular use but yes, I don't think the battery's on these cars are up to much so it might be the problem. I'll see what the dealer says.
Good shout with the app Kumaran. On a separate note, have you got an Amazon Echo yet? You can control the app from that, so you can simply ask your car to lock itself, or send it nav destinations. I love it!!
Dan - Can't you reset it by putting it next to the little key symbol on the steering column? Also, can't you just show up at a random dealer and ask for help?
Hi Barney, yes I have tried the remote app which works ok (thanks Kumaran). The problem is intermittent but I'm not using the car for anything other than round trips to home as I don't want to find myself somewhere and not be able to lock the car. Turning up at the dealers might be worth a try but I've got it booked in on the 1st of Feb anyway and I'm in the fortunate position to have other cars I can use.
It is simply absurd that cars are now so complicated that we may not even be able to lock them. My wife's Ford suffers from the same issue. Any sensible design would include a manual over ride for essential functions like this.
Hi Matt, as Barney says you can manually lock the car with the key, my only worry is that it might decide to unlock itself after I've left it. I don't know what's wrong with the system or how it works, I would like to think that BMW have considered what would happen in the event of system failure and put safeguards in place. I've not been able to speak to anyone at BMW who can tell me that I don't need to worry about it though so for the moment I'll use one of the other cars.
I was too fast to judge BMW by Ford's low standards. When the alarm malfunctioned on my wife's SMAX we had the choice between letting it go off all the time and not locking the car. Very poor.
While I am on the subject the coolant temp level sensor on the E34 is a similar design fault. On the E28 / E30 OBCs the warning light would come on whilst driving if coolant started to drop. On the E34 it very helpfully warns you that you just cooked your engine as soon as it cuts out (!)
Sorry to be a bit off topic, but I think weak design is just about consistent with the spirit of the thread !
There is a low coolant level sensor on the E34 as well though isn't there?
I went out to the F10 yesterday and it unlocked itself as I walked up to it without me touching either the key or the handle. I got a low battery warning as I started it up so my problems may well be battery related. I've had to buy a new charger as the F10's battery gets fried if you try to charge it with a conventional charger apparently. I went for one of these, https://www.tayna.co.uk/CTEK-MXS-5.0-Charger-and-Conditioner-MULTI-XS-5.0-P8690.html
I'll charge it up overnight and see if there is any improvement.
On a side note I managed to curb a wheel for the first time yesterday due to a ridiculously narrow width restriction in North Watford so I'm not a happy bunny at all ATM.

Did you take out the BMW paint & wheel insurance? I've used it a few times now (getting used to a RHD car again!) and it's brilliant. It's the first insurance I've ever had where I feel I get more out than I put in
No Barney I didn't. I've got surround view which helps a lot with parking and I've managed not to clip a wheel at all in the 3 1/2 years I've owned the car. If hadn't had a bus right behind me I'd have reversed and turned around rather than attempt the width restriction, it was that narrow. I'll just have to get it sorted out I suppose.
No worries Matt, I didn't know that, not helpful at all if it doesn't tell you if the level drops as you're driving. My E39 developed a crack in the radiator when I was driving and the low coolant level warning probably saved the engine.
So, I took the car to the dealer who diagnosed a sticking fuel cap solenoid which they replaced under warranty. They returned the car to me with exactly the same problem . I took the car back and they 'found' another fault with the drivers door handle, this has to be ordered to chassis with a lead time of 3 weeks. They've given me an X5 3.0d to use until my cars fixed which is ok but no M5. At least it's winter.
This has just happened to my car. I noticed recently the rear door handle (behind the driver) not working all the time when trying to lock with the thumb pad. It would unlock every time, but locking was intermittent. All other handles worked fine.
Then on Friday, the car locked (with the front door handle), then immediately unlocked again. It did it repeatedly, with all 3 working handles, and even if I locked it with the fob while standing next to the car. I tried locking it with the physical key, but that only locks the driver's door.
I then tried moving away from the car and locking it with the fob again and it's fine. It stays locked. I've used it a couple of times since and the situation is consistent. If I'm near the car, it won't stay locked. It only works when you're out of range of the comfort access fob detection, but within old-school fob range.
The rear door handle is completely dead now from a comfort access point of view, so no doubt a visit to the dealer and another warranty claim is about to happen...
Hmmmmm. My car is at Coopers, where it has been for a week now. It needs a new door handle, as expected, but the part is on 'back order' with no set date for delivery.WTF?! How is a door handle for a current model on back order? Or is it because comfort access has gone wrong a lot, and they've used up all the stock in replacements?!
BMW UK are to provide me with a loan car until it arrives apparently, but this will be through Enterprise so will probably be a Merc
Mine took around 10 days. It has to be ordered to chassis apparently. Hope your replacement car isn't too terrible. I used the X5 I had to do about 10 trips to the dump, it was the only thing it was good for.
They gave me a Merc E220D as a replacement when mine got rear-ended. (Not badly, but needed a new bumper skin).
What a pile of rancid turd.
The only thing that was good about it was the ability to change the interior illumination colour to pretty well anything you like. Or, indeed, to have it cycling. To change anything relating to the dynamics (and I use the term in its loosest possible sense) required delving into the menus. Which were as intuitive as a 70's Honda manual. The satnav was, I suspect, designed by Tomy and the acceleration was best described as glacial.
It did do quite a lot to the gallon. Or maybe it just seemed that way because it took so long to cover any distance.
They had the nerve to tell me it was an equivalent. After offering a 330i, which I had already agreed would do for the week I was going to have it.
I'd prefer a dodgy Merc to what they gave me. I got a dirty old 320 diesel from Enterprise, with the most scarred alloys I've ever seen, a boot that has apparently been used for carrying rubble, and a smell to the interior resembling wet dogs. They are contractually obliged to give you a a BMW, but they ONLY have diesel BMWs. They also don't have a single 5 series available in the London area apparently, and this was the only 3 series. They can't provide any other car. First world problems, granted, but I do HATE diesels so much. Nor do I believe them when they say this is the only car...
