Hi, I have owned my f10 m5 for 3 months now and for the last month or so I have been getting vibration through my steering wheel when braking from 70-40mph. Took it to my local BMW dealer today and they have informed me that my front discs are warped! The disc's were fitted by the BMW dealer that I purchased the car from in July, and have only covered 2000 miles.
I now am looking at a bill of £1500 for new front discs and pads, as my dealer who I bought the car from is saying tough luck your problem! I have never fracked the car and only use it at weekend and bedded the brake discs in.
Does anyone know of anything that I can do to get the dealer to pay the full amount or at least contribute to the cost?
Can you get a second opinion? We hear loads of talk of warped discs, but I've never actually seen it...though I have seen and experienced a lot of issues with discs picking up crap and feeling warped as a result. To put it into perspective, the nearside front caliper on my E39 M5 seized partly on. It got so hot that it was smoking and I was certain that the disc would be shagged. Nope - got the wheel off, freed the caliper with a hammer and changed the lot. Complete waste of money - all I needed to do was service the caliper as there was absolutely zero runout on the disc...but there was a lot of pad pick-up which needed removing to stop it feeling awful...
I'm back in the UK next week and I have a dial gauge. If you're anywhere around Surrey/Kent then let's get the ting jacked up and test the disc to see if it's actually warped before dropping our trousers to replace the discs...
Really appreciate your reply, unfortunately I am no where near Kent. I am getting the discs replaced this morning, but have taken out a compliant against the selling dealer. I don't hold out much hope. I can't believe a brand new set of discs can be warped within 2000 miles.
Me neither. Hence my comment about getting a dial gauge on them (or even putting them down on a flat surface and using a steel rule to see if there really is a warp).
Once again appreciate the reply. Just collected the car from my local dealer, with new front discs and pads! I have the old discs and pads so I will try with a steel rule.
The dealer I purchased the car from who I spoke to yesterday saying is there some way of you helping me out, as I have only owned the car for 3 months and as you put brand new discs and pads on before I bought the car, I would have thought you would offer a solution, has now emailed me saying they would now collect the car leave me with a loan car and check the discs themselves! Well that would have been great if I was offed that yesterday, but he didn't want to know then, it was only when I emailed a letter of complaint they have changed there tune!
Still too late for them to check the discs on the car, as I have had the new ones fitted. I am now awaiting a call on Monday from the dealer principal.
They were sent away to BMW apparently. They measured the run out 0.52mm on n/s & 0.23mm on o/s
