F10 Turner Exhaust Review

Hi all,

Posted this over on the other forum also.

I installed the Turner straight pipe exhaust (Turner F10 M5 Race Inspired Axle-Back Exhaust - Turner Motorsport) yesterday, and wanted to share my thoughts/impressions with the board.

Service - contacted Turner about a week and a half ago with a few questions. Heard back from them very quickly with honest responses to my questions, and I decided to pull the trigger. They shipped same day (even though the time difference gave them a short window to get it out. They even wrote me an email on the delivery date to make sure I received it and was happy with everything. Great team to deal with overall!

Aesthetics/design - I opted for the polished tips, with logo and I think they look great. I know some people aren't big fans of the corsa style, but personally I think they compliment the lines of the factory diffuser quite nicely.

The pipes are basic stainless 304 pipes - so not exactly "works of art" like the Akrapovic, but you only see those if the car is on a lift, so doesn't bother me. The bends where quite smooth and the mounting posts had clean welds. Two points to note:

1) My installer (sleek-sam on the boards, who I strongly recommend for any Norcal guys that don't already go to him - thanks BarryB for the intro!) had to do some minor bending of the mounting posts to get the tips lined up, but that may be because of the prior exhaust I had on the car. Which brings me to point 2.

2) If you had another exhaust installed, you "may" have to either chop more of the OEM pipe, or weld on an additional piece. In my case, the cut points for this exhaust were a bit closer to the rear bumper than the exhaust I was taking off, so we had to get a muffler shop to weld on a small extension of about 3 or 4 inches. Not a big deal, but worth noting.

Sound - I think the pipes sound great! Very aggressive, but not obnoxious at all from inside the cabin. You retain all the factory "pops" but they are considerably louder - especially when coming off the gas at 4K rpm+! Besides stock, I have only heard the E-Race and Supersprint in person, and these pipes are probably very close to the E-Race sound (maybe slightly louder, but a touch less "deep"), but I haven't spent a ton of time listening to the E-Race, so would need to do another comparison. They are considerably louder and more aggressive than the Supersprint.

Cold start is really aggressive, but quiets down after a few seconds.

Low rpm, gentle driving gives off a nice low rumble (similar to an AMG MB - in a way). Throaty with nice resonance - more like the way the car should be from the factory.

High rpm sounds aggressive. The car really starts to scream and will definitely grab attention, but again, inside the cabin is still VERY comfortable. Like many have said, the sound-proofing in this car is too good...

Haven't encountered any drone in a 40+ mile drive home. I tried 5th, 6th and 7th gear cruising and as long as I was around 2k rpm, I didn't hear anything. Like Turner mentioned on their site, if you are bogging the engine (45mph in 7th gear) you may get a little, but that's just a sign of bad driving.

Video Clips - Forgive the quality. I shot them with an iPhone 5. I think they are decent enough, but I'm sure I could do better with a GoPro or better camera - but I don't have one. As others have stated, videos don't really do exhaust sounds justice, you lose a lot of the bass, but you can get a general idea. I live in San Fran, so anyone local in the Bay Area who wants to listen, I am happy to show you in person. I also have a low-rpm sound clip, but need to get the video corrected first (shot upside down, haha)

Curious. Have they dyno'd this exhaust? Is there any power gain?
On their website they claim a gain of 19hp which I can backup with my own RPi GTM system.

Like Dave mentioned above - I am sure you pick up some hp by removing the mufflers and smoothing the bends. Can't say I have noticed a dramatic difference, but I suppose that is normal for 15-20hp on a 560hp car.

You also shed some weight. The pipes are considerably lighter than the OEM exhaust.

Found this on YouTube:

BMW F10 M5: Autocraft's "Project 469" Dyno Run - YouTube

They just did a Turner exhaust and BMC Filters on this F10 project so far

Per the video:

Pre Mod dyno: 506.85 whp and 473.63 wtq

after exhaust and BMC filter upgrade:

530.42 whp and 496.61 wtq

So that's +23.57 whp and +22.98 wtq

I think the Turner exhaust sounds great (though haven't heard it in person yet...but imagine it's even better) and for now plan on getting it when I get my F10. Your post here really helped me decide...thanks!

My family lives up in SF and Marin, so would love to take you up on hearing it in person next time I'm up there.

Been scouring the interwebs looking for excuses to get this axle back system! Thank you for the most convincing one yet. Turner should link these videos, after watching thiers I was still on the fence, these pushed me over, took my wallet, and spent my money! Thanks!

Cheapest I have seen for sure. It's a simple, quick, and easy way to get sound out of the car. I have seen some videos that show there is some droning around 1800 RPM in 7th gear running about 75 MPH but that can be mitigated by dropping a gear or changing speed up or down. Otherwise I don't see a down side. Not much R&D has to go into a muffler delete mod so you are paying for materials and craftsmanship. I just ordered mine, a few bucks over $1,300.00 delivered with the polished black tips, turner logo, slanted cut. Did the logo's and the slant so I don't end up getting posted on the "imitation CP car thread" Hehe!

As I read it, Turner state that they provide mounting brackets that also allow the OEM muffler to be re-attached but, if like me you're trying to do so to achieve a "nothing has changed" effect at some point in time down the road, I suspect we're both deceiving ourselves--the question is, do they care? In my case, it's a lease return at some point down the road--I doubt they'd care but it's a risk I have to reconcile (or stick with the stock [lack of] sound).

I had the Turner muffler delete mod installed on my 14 F10 M5. I love it. It has the growl, look and overall feel of what I was looking for. Yes there are much more expensive, refined and desirable options out there for the well heeled or extremely patient and savings savvy but the instant gratification I got from this choice works fine for me. I retained the stock mufflers for install via clamps or re-weld later but that is still some time away. I haven't done a Dyno run on it, I find that the 560 stock HP is already SOOOOO much and totally overpowers my ability to use it in SoCal while maintaining my drivers license and staying out of prison. its also far more than enough power when I take it up into the twisties to enjoy the incredible handling and dynamics of the car...you cant really get much speed when negotiating rapid fire turns, short straights and no guard rails but the incredible feel of that machine working at your fingertips with that growl coming in through the windows is why we have these right!?!. So I enjoy the sound, bad *** look and the knowledge that the number of cars that could hold a candle to me if I did drop the hammer is pretty slim around here.

Bottom line is, weigh the options and really look at how you use your car. If you are a parking lot stats man that doesn't really drive his car, you are already ahead of most of the pack with a stock car,. If you are a serious motorsports fanatic and you track or race your car with like competition, you may need to drop that cash to get those 700+ HP numbers. If you are like most of us who drive these machines daily and take it out to have a little fun in the mountains or the occasional track day, be cognizant of the return on your investment...you already know the initial buy in wasn't exactly cheap...:grinyes:, so if all you really want is to get a little more rumble out of the car, this is a great way of doing it without selling the farm. :deal:

Man, sorry about not responding...been out driving. Lol. Total out of pocket was about 1300.00 after install.

I'm a huge fan of the corsa style tips!
I would put those on any of my cars. Aggressive and quite honeslty, condiering my mid age... retro!

I picked mine up from a user on the board and love everything about it. It sounds amazing and looks great.

For everyone worried about the drone, it only happens when driving in S1 and crusing in the 1800-2000 range. I am always in S2 or S3 so I don't have the issue unless I am coming to a stop and it's for a split second.

I've been told if you turn off ASD, that drone will go away. I have yet to try it but plan to do it when I get back home next Monday.

Installed the Turner last week -- love it. Took a bit of getting used to, but I now am very happy. Disconnected ASD and prefer this set up. If you disconnect manually, you can decide for yourself and replace in 5 min if you don't like it. Found that the drone was reduced and I can hear the pure note of the V8TT much better. Would recommend.

Hmmm, I guess we're seeing/hearing things a bit differently. For me, I can certainly tell the difference having 'coded' it off but my goal was to calm the drone around 2K RPMs and, to my ear at least, it doesn't make a dent in that. Does it change the overall sound in the cabin--yes, absolutely. I think "raw" would be a good way to describe it now--I hear a lot more turbo whoosh and the sound is far more metallic--that I quite definitely like!

For clarity, though, my feeling about the exhaust itself remains entirely positive (apart from the embarrassing volume of a cold start). The other points I've made in this thread relate to the ability (or inability) for ASD to calm that one point in the RPM range where the exhaust drones.

Drive it in S2 or S3 and you won't hear the drone :).
Err... I'll call BS on that one... :winkthe transmission speed/aggression doesn't affect resonance at a given RPM--that's where the exhaust-noise originates. Sure, it'll hold a gear longer but it will ultimately drop to more efficient gearing and then the drone appears once it settles around 2K RPMs.

The cold start is fairly loud but I would consider it embarrassing :).
Yes, so do I (and, though, I believe you meant to disagree--the universe didn't allow you to :smile)

I did come from an 800 HP ZL1 that shook my neighbors house so this is quit subtle for me. Haha
HOLY CRAP... hahaha, I'd love to have heard that (from a safe distance).
