New wishbones at 17000 miles

Took the car in for a service on Wednesday and reported rear suspension crashing and rattling on anything but perfect road surfaces.

They called me after several hours and told me new wishbones were required, and that they had to get them from Germany, would be a couple of days or so.

So a 320D was delivered a few hours later.

Yesterday the garage called and said some of the parts are in, will update me Monday.

You guys have this to come undoubtedly, mine must be the highest mileage 12 plate F10 in the UK.

Will keep you updated

John

Wow, at 17000 miles only and you already experienced that kind of failure.

Can you describe your type of drive, highway, city, country roads, tracking, cobblestone, etc.? 17k is about 1/3 of normal BMW suspension part life span.

Motorway at least 75%, no tracking or cobblestone roads.

Well dealer called saying that the parts were fitted, ready for collection, see how I get on with it.

Collected the car this afternoon and seems no different. Any ideas anyone?

I seem to recall a couple of members on here having an issue with suspension and it ended up being diagnosed as rear shock absorbers, however these were not available until December?

Thing is, when they called me to advise it needed wishbones, they said they would keep the car until they had the psrts as it was unsafe to drive. My thoughts at that time were that they had the car in bits and did not want to put it back together again, but of course I could be wrong.

Any advice appreciated.

I have had some issues with a clunk sound coming from the rear of my M5 since I collected it. I know some European owners have had the same issue. It is caused by the rear coils being slightly too short which means there is some rotational play in them - the movement in them is caused by driving on a poor road surface, speed bump etc. This may be the issue with your car ?

There is a service bulletin or campaign out for it to be fixed. Apparently the parts needed will not be available for fitting until December this year. It has been posted about a fair bit on M5Post.
