Probably 3 years, or into its 4th year. For example, the e60 M5 came out in '05 (Europe) and LCI was '08 models. It's just my preference to wait.
I'm never in a rush to jump into first production year cars. That and these cars take a significant hit in depreciation and within 1.5 years, will be about half the cost (depending on mileage, options, etc). My M5 was $98K MSRP. Built in Nov '08, I bought it used in April '10 for $54K with 26K miles on it. That means in about 1.5 years, it was worth about half the original MSRP. I could buy new, but having the option to buy used and save some money is appealing too, especially if I find one used with all the options and color I want.
