Probably to try to balance out the race considering the power to weight ratio difference.
Since the Challenger did not appear to be the new 6.4L "392" model, this means it was the older 6.1 engine, which had only 425hp and 420ft-lb of torque. Considering it weighs 4200lbs (about the same as the M5), and has far less power, this was an expected outcome.
Even the newer challenger which has 470hp and 470ft-lbs (and supposedly far better under-the-curve output than the 6.1, which was the goal of the upgrade rather than peak power figures), it would still lose quite spectacularly...
