F10 M5 on Yahoo "10 Cars you don't buy during gas crisis"

This made me chuckle a bit

10 cars you don't want during a gas crisis - Yahoo! Autos

Quote:
BMW packs a lot of technology into all 4,200 pounds of the M5, notably a new twin-turbo V-8 that puts out 560 hp and produces enough oomph to pass everything on the autobahn. Germans pay dearly for that rush of power: $8.50 per gallon for a car rated at 14 mpg city/22 mpg highway. Americans will pay dearly too when the M5 reaches the U.S. market later this year for an estimated $90,000

The E39 was rated 12/20 (revised) and the F10 puts out an extra 160+ hp!! E60 rated about 11/17, and about 50 hp less. So 14/22 is pretty strong for what you are getting.

As to pricing, again if the information is correct, it is in the same range as the E60, yet has a lot more technology. Depending on what BMW puts into its "base" price, it looks like about a small premium over the E60 and I am assuming no gas guzzler tax, making any increase more palatable. Most E60's went out the door close to $100k, I would expect about the same for the F10.

Wonder where the "EPA" ratings are coming from this far out before U.S. availability.......... Car companies usually wait until way late in their cycle to run the numbers as they are continually tweaking their programming.

Jerry

Ha! My wife sent me the same article and I was about to post the link here 'til I saw this thread. My conclusion is that people who can afford the high end cars right off the bat noted on that list are 1)Not worried about gas prices because 2) they likely have a gas-sipping vehicle that gets them around for DD duties.

i wouldn't agree that people buying these cars don't care about fuel efficiency...some of us do. i'm not expecting to get prius mileage with a performance car, but i do expect that one of the engineering targets has to be efficiency relative to performance. on that scale the e60 was a failure, and it was one of the (not the only) reasons i never considered buying one. as i recall the epa ratings on my m5 were 14/21 (old calc) and when i sold the car my obc was showing a 19.1 mpg long term average....which i didn't think was bad given all the performance that was available. i would agree that if the f10 m5 comes in at 14/22 or better, that bmw has done a good job of balancing performance and efficiency...and that's really all you can ask of a performance car.

Right, so gas prices are likely not too major of a concern. I wasn't trying to imply they don't care about fuel efficiency. It's just that I'm sure they are not saying "WTF, I gotta fill this thing up again!?" every time their M vehicle gets close to empty on the gas.

The Panamera GTS probably doesn't have a gas guzzler tax
