For me, and I suspect for a lot of people here that have worked hard for the money to buy an M5, gas cost is not inconsequential. It's certainly not one of the deciding factors, but I figure I averaged about 13 mpg in my E60 M5. After 130,000 miles, that's 10,000 gallons of gas, or about $40,000. If I could have saved $10,000 by getting 25% better gas mileage, that would have meant a lot.
