I think Phish hit the nail square on the head. Just goes to show how strong the M5's credentials are if motojourno's are choosing to compare it against more focused sport coupes IMO.

I'd like to think that the VAST majority of the buyers are looking for a big, comfort four door and a bigload of power.
Not a sport car....Yes the GTR is a four seater but you can't fit an adult in the back for a long time...

^Valid points. But the fact is the M5 is infused with motorsport DNA which, IMO, makes it so much more than just a 5 door luxo barge with a big engine - which there are great many to chose from, of which not all can hustle with a GTR, XJR etc. I would take great pride being an engineer at BMW M division if the 5 door barges I helped develop where being benchmarked against sport coupes. Not only that, it's far more entertaining than * adanoydnal voice* The seat clearance in the back of this one is 2 inches greater than that of the other car *adanoydal voice*

I totally agree... the M5 shouldn't be compared to any of these high performance coupes. I think the automotive press is too impatient to wait for the new M6. The M6 will be a much better comparison for the XKR-S and GT-R.

They used the wrong Panamera tho, I suspect they wanted to keep all the cars roughly in the same price range.

I agree with the concerns raised about comparing it to coupes.

The buyer of an M5 will want the practicality of four doors and four usable seats. The F10 should be getting compared to the likes of the E63, XFR, Rapide, Panamera and Quattroporte.

The M6 should be left to fight it out with the GTR, XKR etc.
