560 PS = 552 SAE HP

The current X5M and X6M produce 555 SAE HP according to BMWUSA.com so this seems like more unofficial crap to me. I'll wait for BMW (directly) to say what the output is. With the larger turbos and inter-coolers, why would the F10 M5 engine make 3 HP less than the truck motors?

I call B.S.

The photos seem authentic. The performance specs.. do not think are accurate. 552hp 501tq? Less powerful than the X5M? I do not think so...

In March, when Chris Harris drove the new F10-platformed M5 for us and EVO magazine, BMW wouldn't yet confirm what tweaks had been made to the X6M/X5M twin-turbo V8, but admitted to different intake and exhaust systems and cryptically stating it would be unlikely to let the M5 have less power than the hot-UVs. True to form, the new M5 has more than 547 HP.

Unfortunately for BMW, it's only a little bit more — 552 HP. While a sizable jump from the previous E60 M5's power output, it's still a few horsies short of the newest badass bomber from across the puddle — the Cadillac CTS-V.

Horsepower wars cannot go on forever, without a break. It's like musical chairs. At the time, the current CTS-V was being designed, it was ok to have that much displacement, and nothing wrong with supercharging it, to boot. At the time the F10 ///M5 was being designed, that approach was not OK. Right now, the constraints of societal norms (fuel economy and the popularity of green'ness), prevent BMW from taking her to say, 600+ hp. So BMW was left without a path to more horsepower, when the music stopped. I'll bet anything the next CTS-V won't have much more than 600hp, if it even has that.

-Brake calipers are paint matched and with ///M logo?

The interior looks to be of higher quality than the F10 5ers (535i/550i). The center console, including the cup holder tray look to be leather. The trim doesn't look great, but probably a $0 cost option.

Difficult to tell, but steering wheel looks like it has two M buttons. Both are an M in a circle like on the E60.
Shift paddles look like the same as on the normal 5ers.. should of been a different paddle design than the normal 5er.. something similar to the E60 at least.

k so after all the wait i'm really not impressed with the bullshit M6 rims, and now this huge disappointment with the V8 twin turbos!!!!!
gosh i hope this M5 will start to grow on me, its just not aggressive enough, although i do understand that its a 4 door sedan but still i wanted more, anyways lets hope the specs are bull, because cadillac is way ahead with their specs for years now, and it took the M division 7 years to barely match that? i don't think so, something must surely be wrong with that article, we shall see

yeah spy pics have already been spoted with manual tranny, which supposedly is only available for US market,
but quite frankly i don't see the point, after driving a manual for over 7 years it gets old very quickly in high traffic areas, nowdays the dsg, smg and so on are just so much more advanced
but to each its own

The exterior is less impressive than I had hoped, and I also think the tail pipes are not large enough compared to our E60. Hopefully it will look better in person.

Hey man, relax. does anyone you know here drive a CTS-V? Really? You want outdated push rod technology or do you want a Bavarian Bomber? There is more to these cars than hp. The V-12 Benzes and AMG cars have a ton of hp as well. So what? If you don't know what you are getting when you go M, then you will be fixated on hp. %99.9 of drivers in the US rarely if ever use it so it becomes a bragging point, little more.

I predict the final specs will come in at around very available 575 hp. It will be more than even most fans of this car can ever use. The tuning program for this car will be ungodly. Easily into the 600 range and beyond. The looks are solid. M Division will not lose sleep over CTS-V. The M3 is more of an actual competitor and quite better IMO at that. It's a solid effort but no one here is getting rid on their M for a CTS-V. I know I certainly never would. Cheers!

That outdated push rod technology has been eating up the M5 from an acceleration standpoint, and doing so in a heavier car. Don't mock it when you can't beat it.

99.9% of drivers in the US rarely if ever use it so it becomes a bragging point, little more.

Are you really trying to convince people that a mid size CTS-V sedan/coupe that weighs between 4200 and 4300lbs is more of a competitor for the 3700lb M3 than the 4100lb M5? Come on.

You'd be a fool for thinking that M doesn't lose sleep over the fact that the CTS-V is a faster car than the M5, both in a straight line and around turns.

Out of curiosity, if the X5M only makes 547hp SAE, why do all the media outlets tout it as 555hp SAE?

There is no way BMW will release this with less than the 555HP currently found in the X5M & X6M. Even 3HP less would create a marketing headache....

Also, just look at the competition:

Cadillac CTS-V 556HP
Mercedes E63 Performace Pkg 557HP
Audi RS6 580HP

Peak torque at 1500 RPM!!!

I can tell you this will be fun. This will be glue you in the seat excitement.

Some folks get wrapped up on horsepower, but a nice flat torque curve is what makes things happen.

Would love to see what a real world 50-70 MPH time would be. This is something you might actually use often.

I used to have a 50-70 in under 2 second ride with 4 wheels, it was FUN!

Hey maybe they are keeping the rated HP figures low for insurance or other reasons? Again, could care less about the HP figures as it is all about torque over a wide RPM range. Also if you can somehow flatten out a long HP curve this is good a well.
