Dr. Segler.. all I ask of you -demand as you put it - is that you put a manual transmission in the new ///M5 & ///M6 and you will make me a very very happy customer.

However that is what BMW M CEO predessesor Bruhnke did according also to many wishes of some Members. However a guess would be that less than 15-20% where manual on the US market and even less than 5-10% overall.

But in the end the customer is always correct.

Agreed, but see it the way I do. The E39 and E60 had very close sales numbers. However the e39 was completely manual. How could BMW make such a huge shift and forget the rest of the world and only offer SMG in the M5 when the previous very was easily the most successful in manual transmission. What? Did the e39 drivers suddenly forget how to drive stick? Its the e39 that really started it for many of us and I will wager a buck or two that many people who owned the e39 simply did not buy an e60 because of the transmission options. So while your e60 manual numbers may be correct I believe their after thought introduction of a manual transmission was terrible and the fact they did not offer it to the rest of the world was also quite shocking. Pretty sure the numbers would have been much different should they have done it from the beginning, properly.

My guess is they were too caught in the technology of an F1 car and trying to "shove" it down our throats rather then giving people options like the great Porsche has been doing for years. Keeping a enthusiast group happy and loyal is a tough job that costs $$ in RnD etc. but I have no problems paying up.

Great guy and he seemed personable.. or at least had his talking points in order.
Im sure Gustav if you had asked him about 1. Weight of F10 m5 compared with lesser 5 series and 2. Manual transmission, he would have repeated his talking points..

It is going to be a long wait till Geneva..

Great points - if the E60 owners were all so happy with the SMG, then why would BMW even have bothered offering a stick (you certainly don't see Mercedes in a hurry to offer stick shifts in well...darn near anything). In many ways the SMG in the E60, which tried to be the BEST of both worlds (auto and stick), was actually the worst of both. Later variants in the M3 are better, but still... A friend of mine first drove an SMG car years ago when they came out and I asked him "How was it?" - he paused and said with disdain "Like being your own passenger in a stick shift car..."
