Pretty much just buy the 550i with the M package, have RPI or Dinan tune it, and boom you have the M5 and save $30k lol
I really don't like the path they are headed down. If I wanted a turbo car I would go buy a GT2 or a Porsche Panamera. I love the M5/6 for the raw N/A power and race like feel. If the new M5 feels anything like the 2011 550 I drove, I will hate it. Feels so much like a Mercedes....

Which is exactly why I don;t believe the next M5 will have 2nd han 4.4 V8 twin turbo. Everyone knows about tuning and about turbos to gain power, I still have faith BMW will suprise us and make a truly amazing M5 like they suprised us with the E60....
Oh please tell me that's not so! Traded my E39 M5 for a MB E63 AMG and I hated it. The car was sooooooo very boring to drive. It could have had 1000hp it wouldn't have mattered
My hopes are set so high for a worthy replacement for my E39 with this next generation M5. I will be so disappointed if it is not what I am hoping for.

You're missing the point.
Suspension, brakes, gearbox and aero is all different on the M5 as well as tune...add all that together plus warranty and lower resale and you'd be better with the real deal
Anyways, the sport models have always been available early in Europe, it's only n america that has them delayed...

Amen!!!
What makes an ///M an ///M is not pure power numbers. You can tweak all you want a 550i, and still will not be an ///M5 (valid for any generation 5-series and ///M offering, in fact valid for an M3 vs. 3-series). Or by the time you have done so, you would have used the full M5 parts bin and recreated the car, except it came at a cost much much higher than buying the ///M in the first place.
With that said, the 550i is very desriable from a tuning perspective. It's #1 deficiency is not having a LSD, that would be the first thing I would change. A well tuned 550i is a good solution for people that want near M5 power, but absolutely care for a stick. Sadly, I fall in that (old dinosaur) camp, I can't imagine giving up the 3rd pedal just yet. Ditto for people that want AWD, the 550i will offer them that, while the ///M5 will not.
