It is already clear that it will be Double clutch:

DKG / DCT will be the gearbox apparantly: "Along with the new engine, the car will also get a new gearbox, a beefed-up version of the M3’s seven-speed DCT (dual-clutch transmission), as previewed on the 25th anniversary version of the M5 unveiled last week."

M division’s head of development, Albert Biermann, said the new driveline will also receive taller gearing

We’ve been forced to switch to an engine offering greater low-end torque than the naturally aspirated engine to ensure it can cope with the longer axle ratio,” Biermann said. “It’s the only real way we can balance achieving the environmental improvements we want while retaining similar levels of performance to today’s car.”

I was hoping for a manual option. I love the SMG but still miss rowing through the gears. With the new high torque motor (TT V-8), a perfect rev-matched downshift will not be as frequently needed (for NA V-10) during daily driving.

75% of all sales for the BMW M3 are Double clutch and I beleive soem M5 owners might be mroe comfort oriented than M3 owners a manual seems unlikely.

I guess I should clarify that if the F10 M5 came with SMG IV, I would not be confident in the transmission's reliability until the end of the first production year (at least).

I guess if you had a manual, people would miss an auto part of the time and and the same the otherway round. The SMG wasn't perfect but did give you both worlds. I'm not sure DC is the way to go, theres a lot of extra parts and weight involved but then whos going to listen to me!

It's a double clutch. Met with my dealer principle, who was in Germany recently being briefed on upcoming models. The M5 is a double clutch and the next M3 will have 6 cylinders and a turbo.

Oh? That M3 part sounded weird but probably possible.

But DCT it is for sure we can say now.

Very cool video. They did indeed show a variant with a manual. However, the manual may only be offered on the non-M versions? BTW, did you notice the two different style dual exhausts.

They will most likely make it available in manual since they will offer the normal F10 M5's in manual.

They even said themselves it's not common in this market segment but they are offering it anyway.
