Thoughts gentlemen......................................... .....

Quotes by Gustav below:

"due to make its first public appearance at the Frankfurt motor show in 2011"

M division’s head of development, Albert Biermann, said the new driveline will also receive taller gearing

We’ve been forced to switch to an engine offering greater low-end torque than the naturally aspirated engine to ensure it can cope with the longer axle ratio,” Biermann said. “It’s the only real way we can balance achieving the environmental improvements we want while retaining similar levels of performance to today’s car.”

Biermann indicated there will be a 30 per cent increase, taking torque from today’s 383lb ft at 6100rpm to somewhere around 500lb ft at little more than 1500rpm. Biermann is also confident the V8’s unique induction system will provide similar levels of throttle response to today’s model.

That means 650 Nm.

The development process is at an early stage. We’re concentrating on the durability and cooling of the driveline at the moment

DKG / DCT will be the gearbox apparantly: "Along with the new engine, the car will also get a new gearbox, a beefed-up version of the M3’s seven-speed DCT (dual-clutch transmission), as previewed on the 25th anniversary version of the M5 unveiled last week."

"Weight saving is playing a big part in the M5’s development, with carbonfibre being used in the bodyshell. BMW is working on a carbonfibre roof and bootlid, mainly because, being sited on top of the car, they are less vulnerable to impact damage."

"The car will get Active Aerodynamics, which blanks off parts of the grille and cooling intakes during warm-up and under light throttle load."

Much like some changes of Efficient Dynamics of todays BMWs.

SMG is DEAD! FANTASTIC!

Good riddance to bad rubbish. Personally I would like to have seen the 5.5L V10 from the M5 'CSL' in this car, but I'm sure the V8 will be an amazing engine.

All that matters is that the next M5 will have DCT and that heinous gearbox will be consigned to the scrap heap where it always, always belonged.

SMG was always, and always will be, a fundamentally flawed and completely unacceptable piece of technology; no excuses can be made for its shortcomings. BMW attempted to pass it off as cutting edge to mask the fact that they couldn't offer the public a solution that was up to scratch. Completely inadequate and completely hopeless.

Doesn't matter anymore. It's gone and we will never see it in another BMW ever again. Anybody who proffers otherwise is a fool.

On a happier note, it seems that BMW has finally embraced satisfactory brakes. 6 piston callipers on the front by the look of it, and, if I am not mistaken, carbon ceramic rotors. 2 or 4 pistons on the rear.

I like the keywords they used, such as weight, torque, and feedback.

The electric power steering sounds interesting. The article really makes it sound like they want to get the max out of it. (and not pussy out like Merc did with the new E AMG).

I'm emotionally confused now... similar to when they announced the e60... dashing my dreams of an e39, yet redefining what I would be looking forward to... my current e60.
I guess things come in cycles... with many of us e60 lovers who are currently f10 haters, I truly believe if the performance is proven in the f10, that will sway our votes again as the e60 did to many of the e39 crowd. the phenomenon will likely be true with other features of the future m5 too, such as the evolution from smg to dct, normally aspirated to twin turbo. At the end of the day i'm certain that most of us on this board value performance over all other aspects of any car.

V8’s peak power should arrive at not much more than 6000rpm.
Nothing high revving about it then.

Hope this won't hold true for the next M3 as well.

Funny AMG who doesn't care about FI vs NA is going strong with there 6.3L V8. Lame excuse, I guess that settles it
